Out past 2 a.m. before playoffs? So much for Howard’s dedication

Hawks Dwight Howard comes out of the game in the third quarter and did not return during a 115-99 loss to the Washington Wizards in game 6 of a first-round NBA basketball playoff series on Friday, April 28, 2017, in Atlanta. Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com

I understand there’s no bed check for home games. I get that Dwight Howard is 31 years old and should be able to make his own decisions as a man. But out until 2 a.m. before a potential playoff elimination game? Really?

You’ve probably seen the story by now: Howard, who just completed his first inglorious season with the Hawks, was ticketed for speeding, driving with a suspended registration and no insurance in the early morning hours before what turned out to be the Hawks’ season-ending playoff loss to Washington on April 28.

No wonder coach Mike Budenholzer had him on the bench in the fourth quarter. Howard needed a nap.

Recapping:

• Via Mitchell’s Northam’s story in the AJC: “At 2:06 a.m. that morning an officer saw a blue car speeding on westbound I-285 near Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. The car, traveling at 95 mph in a 65 mph zone …” Comment: Dangerous, dumb, immature.

• Howard was driving with a suspended tag. A car registration often is suspended when there’s no insurance on the vehicle.

• Howard was driving with no insurance. He had his car impounded. Let’s assume for argument here that Howard just forgot to pay his bill. At best, that shows extreme laziness.

• Worst of all — well, or second to the danger of speeding — Howard was out past 2 a.m. the night before a playoff game. It was before Game 6, which the Hawks needed to win to send the series back to Washington for a seventh game. So much for showing dedication to your profession, your teammates and the organization that signed you. So much for preparing yourself to give the best possible athletic performance.

Howard, who signed with his hometown Hawks for three years and $70.5 million, improved the team’s rebounding this season, but overall made the team worse because of his struggles trying to blend into the team’s motion and ball-sharing offense. He was benched down the stretch of several games, including the entire fourth quarter of two of the playoff losses to Washington.

He aired some of his grievances the day after the final loss, saying, “It was very difficult. I want to play. I want to be out on the floor. I want to make a difference. I want to make an impact, and I can’t do that on the bench.”

His frustration was understandable. But being out late the night before the game just makes him look worse.

Some have wondered if the Hawks will trade Howard this offseason. I’m sure they’ll try. They’ve probably already tried. But there’s not a huge market for a center with $47 million left on his contract who can do only one thing consistently at this stage of his career (rebound).

It’s worth noting: Howard was a free agent last summer, and the Hawks might have been the only team genuinely interested in him (which made their contract offer that much stranger). So if the Hawks do manage to deal him, it will equate to a salary dump because they’re not likely to get any real assets back in return.

The Hawks plan to hire a new general manager after the recent demotions of coach Mike Budenholzer (formerly also the president of basketball operations) and Wes Wilcox (who has gone from general manager to “special adviser” to likely gone soon). Howard’s future will be one of the first major decisions.

Much racial animus for Dwight Howard here. The man is a bonafide first ballot HOF despite your foolhardy protestations.

@Ike Diamond "racial animus"  another race baiting term by people who only look at the world through their small prism of race.  it's 2017.  racism is alive and well and it's because of people like you.

I sometimes stay out to 13 hours before I have to go to work too.

@honest_abe @RodfromCollegePark @FairWeatherFan Yeah.  I'm sure that is why he was fired and the team still has to pay a guy for nothing.  A bunch of bs.  If Danny Ferry was such a great GM and he was only fired for a bunch of bs then why is he not the gm for another franchise.  Care to answer that?  He is a racist and an idiot for being dumb enough to read something like that on a conference call.  He did go to Duke right.  He's supposed to be smart.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ummm, he has been employed by the Pelicans over the last year as a Special Assistant, and here's an article wanting him promoted to GM, Ooops.  I guess the NBA isn't following your agenda of Ferry never getting another job. Facts 1,    Agenda 0.

Ain't gonna happen.Typical of the type.  The stereotype.  Stereotypes would end if the stereotypical behavior does.  So all you little ATL street-corner jive-assed rappers...just stop it.  If you don't we go on thinking about you as simply SFNs.  And you go on thinking it's WE who should change to YOUR species-killing, family-killing, education-loathing lifestyle you can just stuff that nonsense.  Ain't gonna happen.

a little perspective for everyone on rodfromcollegepark.  he is josh smiths most ardent defender.  heh

he's the type who probably defended lavarr balls statement about how ucla lost because they played too many white guys.

it's stupid to think that staying out late before a crucial game isn't detrimental to your health.  optimum performance means sufficient sleep at normal hours.  yes your body knows what normal hours are.  as an older athlete dwight should be even more conscience of this.  tim duncan played into his 40s dwight will be lucky to still be in the league 2 years from now.

no dedication.  stupid.  no game.

i can't watch another game of scrubs like tyler zeller have career games against dwight.  looks like tarzan plays like jane.

@honest_abe Yeah being able to sleep from 2 in the morning until about 4 pm sure does not give you enough sleep.  How do you know what his regular sleep hours are?  I'm sure those Lakers of the 90's and Cowboys championship teams were all in bed at 8pm the night before a playoff game.  SMH.  The Golden St.  Warriors just said that they don't want to be in Utah because there is no nightlife.  I guess they all go to bed at 8:00 also.  You are just totally out of the loop.

we refer to the vox for our science information?  you can pretty much dig up any nonsense on the web to support your view.  it doesn't make it true.

here's an article for you from time.  a slightly more regarded publication.

it was cody zeller.  did you take time out of your day to check tyler zeller's stats?  i'd like to think you have some kind of photogenic memory that spits out useless facts instead of taking time out of your day to prove me wrong.

some people just take a little more time to mature.  in the case of dwight it's taking forever and maybe never.  he's more than proven he's a immature prima donna along stops at orlando, la and houston.

a gigantic specimen who still doesn't have a go to offensive move in the post.  13 years in the league and still no offensive game?  that just shows how much dwight wants to win.  he says just enough things to get another contract.  dwight has hall of fame physical tools with a scrubs heart and dedication.

atlanta aau basketball seems to be the culprit here.  young boys with endless basketball talent coached by shady characters only in it for themselves.  whatever happened to member of that famed aau celtics team?  dwight dominated early with just his physical gifts but never put in time and effort to develop into the kind of player he could've been.  josh smith was a cancer that didn't listen to anyone and eventually teams just started to cut him even though they still owed him money.  he eventually played in china only to be cut by that team.  randolph morris just disappeared into the sunset.  what if aau coaches actually taught fundamentals.  taught kids to respect the game and what teamwork means.  not this individualistic crap and only looking for the payout.

RodfromCollegePark

@honest_abe Interesting you say all of this, but the guy is clearly a first ballot hall of famer.  Mind telling me any other Hawks in the last 20 years that fit that mold?  There have been plenty of big guys, Dwight's size and bigger who have played in the NBA, that actually went to college and had all those fundamentals you speak of but will never sniff the NBA Hall of fame, Christian Laettner, Cherokee Parks, Kwame Brown, Greg Oden, Andre Drummond..........  So if he has all these flaws, he sure has performed better than anyone else in his era, especially straight outta high school.

You know there is nothing wrong with the guy staying out as long as he wants (period), you may not like it but he is a big boy. If you want to complain about anything complain about the fact Ferry would have never signed the guy or give Ken LoseMore the contract he got. Complain about the fact that the owner is a clown or that a coach cannot be a GM or Coach at the same time. what I am saying is that if this is the best you can do about complaining about the Hawks then save the key strokes.

@Bug  That means Ferry was smart to not take this loser. Howards a big baby. He dominated highschool but he has lived up to any of his hype since entering the NBA. All he's done is make babies like the other loser in the NBA. Trade him before you can't get anything for him.

No problem with the late hours, he has to be at his best at 7:30pm Jeff!! But the no insurance, speeding. No ticket for speeding at 30 over? WTH!!!???

Never knew a 30 year old millionaire being out at 2:00 am was such a big deal.  I guess he should be in bed at 8:00 pm.  So say he got home at 4:00 am. How many hours of sleep does the body require?

@RodfromCollegePark @FairWeatherFan what exactly where those racist views?  from all your comments you're probably the most racist person around.  stop always looking for a crutch.  not everything is black and white.  ferry read a scouting report.  it might have been a little insensitive but geez let's get away from branding people so easily as racist.  it's a bunch of bs.

Yeah my agenda is to expose the undercover racist like yourself and honest abe.  Rather you just be a man and say how you feel than try to peg me as a racist.  Any body that thinks that what Danny Ferry said is ok, there is no reason not to think that you are not a racist.  Obviously Honest Abe saw no issue with it, and you stand with him.  So now you know my agenda.  It's to expose racist cowards like yourself.

Hasn't Ferry been working for the Pelicans over the last year?

@RodfromCollegePark @Big Wally @honest_abe @FairWeatherFan Point out one racist comment I have ever posted please.  You on the other hand have several..............for instance your recent comments about the Utah Jazz fans and the Boston Red Sox fans.  You complain a lot about racists, but you are one of the worse ones on here. Last note:  you said Ferry would never get another job because no black player would play for him.  Care to explain him working for the Pelicans then?  I guess they didn't get the memo on the agenda, eh Rod.

@Big Wally @RodfromCollegePark @honest_abe @FairWeatherFan

You do realize that to go from GM to special assistant is a demotion right?  Like going from Manager of a grocery store to a cashier.  Would it surprise me if he gets another GM job?  Not at all.  It's the American way.  Will the black players respect him?  That's another story.

My comments concerning Boston, and Utah were in relation to a player stating that he was called all type of racist things in those stadiums.  Mind telling me how that makes me racist.

@RodfromCollegePark @inoto20 if you read anything that is going on in the courts in Georgia today you would know that DUI is dropping in its conviction rate. In fact cases are down 42% statewide in going to trail. Bud has the money to get set free with a minor community service time for inattentive driving or failure to maintain lane. Because lawyers write the laws to drum up business has nothing to do with others safety. Buds case at least to trail.

@RodfromCollegePark @Big Wally @inoto20 dang rod you really have a thing for black and white eh?  that's how you view the world? it's pathetic really.  everything from the perspective of race.  so petty.  so small.  so sad.
