Jacob Eason struggles in Georgia’s win but it’s a little early to jump ship

October 9, 2016 Columbia, SC: Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jacob Eason gives a thumbs up a receiver, indicating he was finished warming up. Georgia Bulldogs take on the South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday October 9, 2016 at Williams- Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC. The game was delayed one day due to hurricane Matthew which hit the East Coast, including much of South Carolina BRANT SANDERLIN/BSANDERLIN@AJC.COM

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jacob Eason gives a thumbs up sign but his performance against South Carolina was not great. The freshman completed only five of 17 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown with an interception in the 28-14 win. (Brant Sanderlin / bsanderlin@ajc.com)

COLUMBIA, S.C. — He’s a freshman.

He’s five starts into his career.

He was playing in an SEC road game.

Are we going to have to do this every week?

The meltdown by some in the Twitterverse during Jacob Eason’s admittedly borderline horrendous outing Sunday at South Carolina — 5 for 17, 29 yards, one touchdown, one interception — was not surprising. Eason had one potential touchdown pass dropped and his lone interception came on a deflection following a nice breakup by a South Carolina defender. But he also sailed a number of throws to open receivers on short- to-medium-range passes.

Eason’s performance would have been a bigger deal if Georgia hadn’t rushed for 326 yards and won 28-14. But just as the freshman has proven his ability to come up in the clutch with late-game touchdown throws against Missouri and Tennessee, he also reaffirmed Sunday that he’s still green. Very green.

Smart suggested the occasional strong winds at Williams-Brice Stadium affected Eason’s throws but it didn’t impact South Carolina’s Perry Orth as much. He went 26 for 36 for 288 yards (one interception, zero touchdowns) despite being sacked five times. But he also said Eason struggled with “happy feet.”

Smart doesn’t allow freshman to speak to the media. So that means he has to field questions on what Eason was experiencing on the field.

Question: Was Eason getting frustrated?

Answer: “I felt like he was with his feet, his actions, but not his composure. He got a little happy feet at times. It’s a growing process.”

And then: “Look guys, when you go on the road in the SEC, I’ve been 18 years involved in this conference, it is tough, especially on a true freshman. He saw things out there that didn’t exist. He’s growing, and we have to coach him through that.”

Which is kind of the point. It has been hammered home since Eason signed his letter of intent and became the expected starter this season. That doesn’t excuse every mistake, every overthrow or bad read. But struggles are the norm for a freshman quarterback in a major conference like the SEC.

Smart was asked if he ever considered making a quarterback change during Sunday’s game, or should we consider Eason past that now?

“It’s always a consideration, but we didn’t consider it today,” he said.

Had they been losing, it might’ve been a different story. But when a team rushes for 326 yards against teams like South Carolina, it can get by with these growing pains.

no big deal---jacob's still learning the ropes--next year, he'll be lighting it up and the dogs will win the sec east---tennessee's losing a bunch of talent and florida's offense will suck again, as usual.

So, NC is out of the top 25.

Poof, there goes the dogs only "quality" win.

@OH:IO Just like the quality wins of the buckeyes, Rutgers, Bowling Green, and a 2 loss Oklahoma. So much for Michigan State, looks like the entire buckeye schedule comes down to Playing Big Blue.

@OH:IO 1) look who is riding coattails now eh hypocrite.  2) I notice the 4 in the top 10.  Problem is, I don't see any other Big 10 teams at all in the top 25, 3) the mighty SEC, you ask?  6 teams in the top 25.  4)  SEC, still the best chump.

I'm very impressed with how the offensive line has improved.  Coaching is making a difference.  I'm looking forward to having bigger offensive linemen on campus, as Cheney and Pittman prefer.  Opposing defenses will be in for some long afternoons.  Pulling centers?  You don't see that much.  I love it.

@Classof98 There are definitely signs that this team is headed in the right direction but head over to "Dawgnation" and Chip is doling out C's and D's for our performance yesterday.  If Mark Richt were still the coach I'd bet a large sum of money that those marks would at least be a grade higher based on the same performance.  And the story would be about what a great coaching job he did for helping our guys bounce back from a bad loss the week before.  Kirby gets no such credit.  The bias and favoritism is stunning and is really getting old to me.  I love the scrutiny and accountability but its just funny how we only started seeing such scrutiny when Kirby became the coach.  The man can't have a hair out of place without "Dawgnation" criticizing him or it.  10 years Mark Richt mismanaged big game after big game but nobody over at "Dawgnation" ever dared take him to task for it.  He's such a sweet fella.  They miss their boy.

Michigan should really be proud of themselves after running up 70 points on a team that just got hammered by it's previous opponent for over 50 pts. They should be able to put up 50-60 on each of their next 5 opponents. It would appear that they have made  connections with Las Vegas in regard to over and under. There's no shame in that conference regarding running up a big score on a vastly out manned cupcake. 70-0.....they could have put their band and cheerleaders on the field and run it up to 100. The sad thing is that the poll voters think that really makes them great. On the other hand I would love to see them put 70 on the butt-eyes and hasten ole Urban's retreat to "spending more time with my family"...."for my health" or maybe something new and exotic.

@TideDawg Hey, those fake heart attacks can be dangerous don't you know. LOL

TideDawg
TideDawg

@Big Wally @TideDawg Yes! But they are also very profitable. It got Urban out of a hot seat at Florida into a cool shower at OSU. I guess he looked at the talent he had coming back at Fl. and decided a heart attack would be timely. He looked at who was on the OSU schedule and realized he would only have 2 tough opponents every year. A piece of cake for the cupcake kings.

Hey Blowhio, you were pushing Meatchicken State up at the beginning of the year to try to offset you ridiculously easy schedule (which stands to reason being in the Big 2 conference).  Didn't they just get destroyed at home, by a non Power 5 team.  Wow, that has to be extremely embarrassing for 'your' conference eh?

Big Wally

@OH:IO @Big Wally I believe they are in a Power 5 conference are they not?  BYU, nope.  That's a real black eye the the conference eh?

@OH:IO @Big Wally What conference has been winning all the National Championships the last 20 years? eh Bozo?
That's the fact.  We don't have the luxury of being in a conference that only has 2 or 3 good teams year after year.

@UnbiasedObserver  The last 5 national titles were won by teams with pocket passers.  Just go ahead and say "I know nothing about college football" and leave it at that.  Same difference.
