LSU just fired Les Miles — this is what lunacy looks like

Do you know how sometimes things happen in the SEC and people in other regions of the country will look in this direction and say, “What are they thinking?”

Yeah, here’s another one of those things.

LSU has fired Les Miles. No, really this time. This isn’t like last season when Miles was on the verge of being fired after a late-season game against Texas A&M, only to see the Tigers stun the Aggies 19-7, prompting fans in Baton Rouge to chant the coach’s name and then see players carry Miles off the field, which of course led LSU’s weasel administrators to suddenly declare Miles as their guy.

“I’m looking forward to working with coach Miles as he leads this team to a bowl game and another great recruiting class,” athletic director Joe Alleva said.

And then he pulled the knife out of Miles’ back and wiped it clean of finger prints.

But it really happened Sunday. Four games into the season. Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron reportedly were fired the day after an 18-13 loss at Auburn Saturday night, which dropped the Tigers’ record to 2-2 (1-1 in the SEC). The Advocate was the first media outlet to report the news and added that defensive line coach Ed Orgeron (who went 3-21 in the SEC as a head coach at Ole Miss) will take over as interim coach.

Fire Les Miles. Promote Ed Orgeron. Perfect. And by perfect, I don’t mean brilliant.

Georgia fans were divided on the program’s firing of Mark Richt, who won two SEC championships in his first five seasons but none over the next 10. But if Richt’s firing could be debated either way, what about Miles’?

Notwithstanding that LSU’s offense has struggled, in part because of Miles’ struggles to recruit and/or develop a quarterback, I declare this firing insane. Miles won a national championship in 2007. He won SEC championships in 2007 and 2011. His team went 13-1 in 2011, with the only loss coming in the BCS championship game to Alabama when LSU was forced to play the Crimson Tide twice in the same season, given the quirks of the BCS system.

LSU’s records over the next four seasons were 10-3, 10-3, 8-5, 9-3 (including 20-12 in the SEC). That represented a drop and that coincided with Alabama winning two more national titles and Ole Miss and Mississippi State rising in the SEC West. But to fire a coach with Miles’ resume, including nearly winning a second national championship less than five years ago, is the epitome of nuts.

It would be surprising if LSU didn’t go after Houston coach Tom Herman. But Herman has had opportunities from Power 5 conference schools and if he can solicit an offer from a school whose administrators are more grounded and less swayed by the spasms of boosters, he should avoid LSU at all costs.

Sometimes, people laugh at the lunacy that surrounds the SEC. This is another example of why.

The beatdown Ole Piss gave UGA was epic. I love seeing the crybaby fanbase known as the DWAGS get upset.

Can't wait for the epic beatdown UF and Tenn will give UGAG.

I'm confused by all these Bama and OSU fans rushing to the defense of some random ACC Coastal program to which they apparently have no connection.  Someone help me out here.

The word "pathetic" does not even begin to describe how low Georgia Tech fans are willing to go.  I have never encountered a more embarrassing group of people in my life.

@dawg fan I don't take you to be one of those guys that enjoys beating up on your neighbors kids. There's not much honor in doing that. Now if you were like OH:IO who's OSU team plays a 2 game schedule with 10 patsies every year I would understand. Beating a team with a 3-9 record gets no recognition. If you don't play a strong schedule and you aren't good enough to beat good teams then you're in the wrong conference. Where I came from Alabama & Auburn people feel the same way about each other as Ga. & GT. If you can beat your despised rival when they are good....that's far more gratifying.

Bucky ,the Buckeyes have not played a    power 5 team with a winning record yet.Bowling Green  would be a 21 point underdog to ULL this year. Tulsa may be able to compete with Northwestern, but criticizing other teams schedules when you play in the B1G is absurd.Looks like Buckeyes may get a test late in November with Michigan, if they don't choke against Sparty again this year. So the Buckeyes may play only one team this year that will be in the top 10 .

You play your schedule. We'll play ours. We'll see who is in the playoffs and we'll see who is Charlotte or Birmingham or Memphis.

OU was #3, recall. Then got beat by another top 20. Gee, guess shoulda not scheduled them 5 years ago, right?

One thing for sure, the dogs will never smell the top 10 again let alone the top 25.

Be happy among the "others receiving votes".

Looks like Ohio hit the nail on the head. Every time Georgia gets embarrassed it seems their only fallback is to scream about Tech, as if Tech has anything to do with Georgia's failures as a program. Its bizarre, especially since no one really expects Tech to be competitive with Georgia or most programs given that their academic standards dictate that they can't get the talent that other programs can get.

Regarding Miles I'm disappointed as a Bama fan to see him go. We kinda enjoyed having him around the last 5 years and I was looking forward to dominating him some more. Still, he was a good coach and good for some interesting one liners. Oh, well. Chalk up win number 6 in a row over the paper tigers come November.

@Doom Classical liberal  yea we are a strange bunch alright

its really funny Ive never heard a real Bama or Ohio St fan talk about Tech and football in the same sentence

guess what; they don't care about Tech; nor are they going to stand up for them

FlatTire
FlatTire

@Doom Classical liberal no whats bizarre is you can't read the posts on here.  No one talks about Tech until a Tech fan decides post snide remarks about UGA.  What do you expect

And save the Im a Bama fan; everyone is now

@FlatTire @Doom Classical liberal

Meh. Its been well known for a long time on other blogs that I'm a Bama fan. That's the other thing that's bizarre- the insistence by every dawg fan on here that every Bama, Ohio State, or whoever fan is secretly a Tech fan in disguise who just wants to bust on Uga. You guys are a strange bunch.

Regardless, good luck to Kirby. We had a good run with him and I hope he turns it around at Uga and makes em respectable. Its just that the transition from D coordinator to head coach is looking a lot more like Muschamp 2.0 than Saban 2.0.

The Doom
The Doom

@FlatTire @Doom Classical liberal

Tech is okay with me because they're one of the 2 local teams and because I like option football having grown up watching the Bear Bryant wishbone teams of the late 70s. I like to see them do well in the ACC but if they lose on any particular weekend it certainly doesn't ruin my day. I'd have to say I watch a lot  more Uga football than Tech football since Uga is the sec team.

But I don't think Ohio, myself, or most of the other SEC team fans talk much about Tech one way or another because they're not much important to us. I follow SEC mostly, Ohio probably follows mostly Big 10, and Tech just doesn't figure much into the football that most fans watch unless they're ACC fans or Tech fans.

You guys seem too consumed with a program that over the long haul will never really be competitive with uga due to the talent and academics differential.

@TOJacket sure thats my point its a back and forth issue but don't come on here and act like UGA fans live off of beating Tech if that were so the previous staff would be coaching at UGA

FlatTire
FlatTire

@TOJacket no one was going to consider a 2 loss Tech team that went on to lose in their conference championship to be picked in the playoff

they weren't going with 2 losses and winning the ACC

lets don't be silly

That's bull too........top 10 recruiting classes and 3 games in a row decided by 6 points, 2 OT, and 1loss got your preacher man run off.

The nerds better focus their energy on beating a coach who is 13-2 against them this weekend.  Here they are popping off at the mouth about anything and everything UGA but neglect to mention how irrelevant, pointless and embarrassing their own team is.  I can't even name a single player on their entire roster other than mighty mouse Justin Thomas and that's just because it's remarkable that someone of his stature can play quarterback at a supposedly FBS level school.  No one talks about Georgia Tech football anymore.  NO ONE.  Their own fans don't even like to broach the subject.
