Smart’s limited media access accomplishing nothing

ATHENS — Jacob Eason hasn’t been allowed to speak to the media since signing day.

Greyson Lambert hasn’t been allowed to speak publicly since last year’s bowl game.

When Georgia’s offensive linemen had their lunch handed to them by Nicholls State’s defensive front in Saturday’s 26-24 win, do you know how many of them were made available to the media?

Zero.

I counted.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart maintained his policy of radio silence when it comes to his quarterbacks and he continues to limit access to several players. Why is that exactly? Because it’s not like allotting limited media access to players is going to be the difference between Georgia winning and losing games — particularly after winning or losing the game already has been determined.

“I don’t know that they’re ready to talk,” Smart said of his quarterbacks. “It’s not a settled position. We’ll continue to do that until we feel comfortable with Jacob with the media, or Greyson as the quarterback.”

And what of no offensive linemen being made available?

“We’re not holding back the linemen,” Smart said.

Not true.

Left tackle Tyler Catalina, a graduate transfer, has been requested multiple times but Smart has red-lined him each time, including after Saturday’s game. Georgia generally has made center Brandon Kublanow, tackle Greg Pyke and guard Isaiah Wynn available every week but none of the three were brought out following the Nicholls State game.

Each of the three were requested by only one or two media members, and Catalina by several, even while Smart incorrectly maintained during and after Saturday’s post-game news conference, “None of the offensive linemen were requested.”

I’m sure Smart believes on some level that he is protecting his players. But he’s overthinking this issue. One would also believe that he has more important things on his mind after a game than who should be allowed to comment and who shouldn’t.

Is this the most important thing going on with Georgia’s program now? Hardly. The narrow escape Saturday illustrated that. But players can provide insight about what went on in the game and Smart isn’t accomplishing anything with this act.

“No comment” never made an athlete better and no access never made a coach better.

No sportswriter ever made an athlete or coach better.  What's to be gained by talking with your lame behind?

@RFC49 "No comment" "No access"....not relevant in either case. It doesn't seem to affect Alabama. If you're the HC, you decide what's good for your team, not some lame sportswriter.

Their 1st Amendment rights are being violated. Maybe they should kneel during the playing of Glory, Glory to ole Georgia.

Sorry your feelings have been hurt by Coach Smart. Get over it and come up with real reporting.

Poor Schultz! He can't talk to the QBs...boo hoo! Smart coached for 9 seasons under Saban. Do you think for one moment that he didn't learn what Schultz is as a writer. Schultz is not allowed on the Alabama campus. He's like venom to players, he turns nothing into a major outcry. Saban's got Shultz's number and Smart knows why. Smart knows what Schultz can do to destroy a player. He knows he needs to keep Schultz away from his team. Good for Kirby Smart!

Everyone thinks the Dawgs were great after beating NC....they're not! Everyone thinks the Dawgs are bad after beating Nicholls....they're not! They are 2-0 after two games. What do you want?? Pretty? A crushing win over Nicholls? They're 2-0! You wanted Eason to pass for 500 yds.? He's a freshman making his first start in a major conference. He's 1-0 as a starter! He was only out there for experience....Lambert will start against Missouri.....Eason will play. You can't make them great by saying they are.....they will be before the season ends.......Wait!

Georgia was 3 or 4 plays from winning by 3 or 4 touchdowns. We just played those plays about as bad as could be played.

Nicholls gets all of the credit for having a great game plan and their Senior ridden team executed as good as they could. Georgia on the other hand played a lot of Freshmen and they proved they need a lot of work . Eason needs to learn to see the entire field and not chose the first person that seems to be open enough. If the receiver is open throw to him. If he is somewhat open Eason needs to go elsewhere. A lot of Receivers were open that Eason did not see or look at.

I think we should use Lambert at the beginning of the Missouri game like we did against N.C. to settle everybody down and observe what kind of plan Missouri has. Then bring in Eason for the dual threat. Eason is our Quarterback but needs more time with confidence in the pocket and Smart needs to open things up more with screens, quick throws to the edge and dump off's to the Running Back's from Eason with everyone expecting a 15 yard or greater pass . Everyone knows he will be throwing a lot of deep passes but he needs to keep the Defense spread out and wondering will he go deep or short  for our Running Back's to get maximum benefit from an Offensive Line  that needs help.

The Missouri game will tell us a lot. Come on Coaches , time to take the kid gloves off and tear some rear end up.

"Georgia was two or three plays from winning by three touchdowns". True. They were one or two plays from losing to Nicholls. It's early. Eason is no Stafford, and

Matt was abysmal his freshman year. It was a typical performance as we've seen the last 15 years. The team plays down to its competition. It'll take Kirby awhile to

"De-Richt" the personnel. They'll all be fine.

@patriotdog I expected Bradley to be the one to try to find a way to assign blame to Mark Richt. No need for him to bother when one of his unpaid lackeys will do it for him.

But I did not know you were covering the UGa Games this year. I thought you and Mark gave up your press passes on Game Day to the crew from DawgNation.
