Eason will be Georgia’s best QB but that doesn’t mean he’s best now

I don’t believe Kirby Smart is playing a game. I don’t believe that one of his quarterbacks has been so far ahead of the other for weeks that it’s clear to him who should start Georgia’s first game against North Carolina.

I also believe he believes that whether Greyson Lambert or Jacob Eason starts won’t ultimately determine what kind of season Georgia has this season. Remember where Smart came from.

Some thoughts:

• There is no question that Eason is the most talented Bulldogs quarterback in camp. There is also no question that if he is ready to start, he will do so. If Eason was at that point, we would know that by now.

Freshman Jacob Eason will be Georgia's starting quarterback eventually but it may not be in the first game. (Brant Sanderlin / bsanderlin@ajc.com)

• Smart came from Alabama. How many great seasons has Alabama had when the quarterback was a relative afterthought going into the season — and maybe even during it and after it? Nobody knew who Alabama’s quarterback would be going into last season, and the Crimson Tide went on to win the national championship over a team (Clemson) with the best quarterback of all (Deshaun Watson). Nobody seems certain who the Tide’s quarterback will be this season, but the team is expected to contend for the title again and will enter the season ranked No. 1.

• This is not meant as a knock on Eason or his potential impact on Georgia. It’s merely to illustrate that Smart came from Alabama and worked for Nick Saban. He grew professionally in a culture where the quarterback was not what defined the strength of a program.

• Georgia will go this season as its running game (Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, offensive line) and its defense goes. Smart’s ability to implement his defensive philosophy quickly is key, which is why Maurice Smith’s transfer from Alabama could be key. The biggest concern is the Dogs’ defensive front, which is thin, particularly with the impending suspension of Jonathan Ledbetter.

• If the Bulldogs can play defense and run the ball, Lambert will be an adequate starter until Eason is ready. Eason will play in every game regardless, and he’ll start when coaches feel comfortable that he knows the playbook, can read coverages, feel the pass rush and not fall in love with his arm too much on difficult throws when he would be better served by throwing it away. I believe all of those are bigger factors than any fear of freshman “panic.”

• Lambert is not an awful quarterback. He’s just not a great one. I get that fans want “great.” But logic suggests Eason is not great now, and he’s more likely to be a liability against a strong team like North Carolina.

• Bottom line: Eason might be the best quarterback on the Georgia roster, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best quarterback today. So I lean toward starting Lambert next week and bringing Eason into the game in a relatively comfortable situation.

Eason is a talented "prospect"...that's all, until he proves it on the field. I hope he is what everybody expects.....I'll wait and see.

OH:IO....Butt eye, you must have flunked creative writing at the Ohio Correction facility. Write something you think of instead of waiting for someone else to provide you with some material that sparks your negative nature.............Lurking? Now that does fit!

In regards to some idiotic comment below about SEC East being weakest Div. in the 5 Power Conferences.  Let's take a look at the current rankings shall we?

SEC East = 3 teams ranked in top 25.

ACC Coastal = 1 team ranked in top 25.

Big Mac West (formerly the Leper Division) = 1 team ranked in top 25.

Heck even the AAC West (Houston) has that many - 1.

Just something else to sit and get mad about eh Blowhio and TO!

@Big Wally Got ya thinking a lot now sport....we will discuss the strengths of the overall conferences at a much later date....
that one Coastal team might have it whittled down to 2 in a few days junior?

@TOJacket @Big Wally Unless they play each other it doesn't prove much. The ACC has two power teams and two or three that are close to being power teams. There are a lot of imagined champions on paper in every conference. Gotta play the game. Maybe someday in the distant future the SEC and ACC will merge into a super conference. Alabama beat Clemson last year but that doesn't mean crap today. Clemson should have been voted number 1 and Alabama 3 or 4 but those positions don't mean anything until games are played. Winning will decide No. 1, not conversation.

Smarts defense, better carry the team... That's what he was hired for.....

A new coach with probably the highest defensive resume' in the NCAA and a highly recruited QB along with a crop of running backs that are a very proven commodity. Sit back and enjoy this season and take a guess whether Eason or Lambert leads the offense. 10 wins? Why not.

Eason may be the most talented QB on the team but he lacks the one tangible that is key to winning. Experience! Give Lambert the start and let Eason finish. Lambert was not playing with the number 1&2 running backs last year. The best offensive line, and the play calling also are factors in games where Lambert looked less of a winning QB. There's probably a dozen guys on this blog that could take snaps and hand the ball to Chubb or Michel. That's all that the QB is going to be doing to start the game. When they get ready to throw it, Eason will be the man. I just can't believe that Smart is going to put Eason on the field to start, no matter how much better he is than Lambert. I doubt if Smart is one to be influenced by public opinion......We'll see! Last year Alabama abandoned the more experienced QB, Coker, and replaced him with an inexperienced QB, Bateman, for the Ole Miss game. The rest is history.

@TOJacket @TideDawg I'll explain it to you if you explain who Lanbert is. Never mind....I've made a few typos in my day.

The Dogs have a chance to be really good. They could win as many as 6 games in Smart's first season. Lack of starting QB

will be a problem and all running backs are injured...go dogs..

And how did Lambert do against "strong teams"?  Even with all of his experience?

Eason at least has a CHANCE of coming out strong out of the gate.  I don't like Lambert's chances to do much of anything.  He is simply not an SEC-caliber QB.

I've already told you...and I have been right for 5 years now. The Falcons will not go to the play-offs until 2021 at best. KARMA...Mr. Blank...KARMA. Mr. Blank did not buy the Thrashers when was asked by many fans to do so. We are a major city with almost 6 MM people and do not have a NHL team. It's embarrassing. Mr. Blank could have bought the team...moved them to Cobb (next to the Braves) where they should have been all along and made $$$$. The team sold for 110 MM now an NHL expansion team cost 500 MM.

In closing, Ted Turner is the one who created this whole problem by selling to the Atlanta Spirit Group which included his son and son-n-law. Thanks TED for ruining the NHL in Atlanta forever.

Ray Goff Anyone?
Ray Goff Anyone?

@thrasherdawg I have a feeling that all 6 of the fans who asked him to buy the thrashers weren't willing to put up some of the 110m needed.  And if they stayed here, they wouldn't be worth 500m.  Sorry, NHL is not a sport that does well down here plain and simple.

thrasherdawg
thrasherdawg

@Ray Goff Anyone? @thrasherdawg Wrong...in 2007 the Thrasher outdrew the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins, two original 6 teams. Why because they were winning. Once Chicago started winning; they have over 300 sell-outs in a row selling standing room tickets in an arena that holds over 22,000. Before Blanks bought the Falcons there were many games with less than 20,000 people in the stands. Braves averaged 12,000 plus per game in the 80's when they were always flirting with last place. For the 1st 5 years, the Thrashers ranked 11th in the league in attendance, and way in the black. Then they were sold to the Atlanta Spirit Group who ruined the team. Hockey doesn't work here, are you kidding me. The Tampa Bay Lightning's arena hold's over 20,000 and is sold out every game. Nashville, sold out every game except for six...last year. Does Basketball work here? In their 11 years here the Thrashers out-drew the Atlanta Hawks by an average of over 42,000 fans per season.Winning and the right ownership solves all problems.

thrasherdawg

@TrueFan1 @thrasherdawg KARMA...they will be lucky to win 5 games this year. You did see how bad Matt Ryan was tonight..right. The regular season will be no different. This will be the sixth year in-a-row that I am correct. No-playoffs. Five more years of this and it will be back to the days of old...stadium only half full.

Blowhio State actually plays 3 teams that are ranked.  Wow, they are really loading up this year.  Ole Urban may actually have real heart pains this year with that 'brutal' schedule.  Oh the humanity.

Dawgs play 4 by the way. Would be more but we have to play Tech, instead of a real non conference opponent.  BOOM, next!

@TOJacket @Big Wally Took only minimum effort to beat Tech and that is what they gave that day.  That being said, we did beat a mighty Big Mac Conf. team in a bowl game with just a bunch of assistant coaches.  What bowl were you in again?

@Big Wally @TOJacket Richt was .500 against Johnson at Sanford and son...2 OT games in 3 years with top 10 recruiting classes.....yea sport...us and the Gators got Richt fired.

@Big Wally @TOJacket Exactly right sport....when you compare the talent of the "Players".....it is similar to a JV playing a Varsity.....like I said CPJ does more with less....500 at Sanford and sewer stadium?

@Big Wally Our bowl was against you big bad SEC boys who barely won against a 3-9 team. Impressive.

@TOJacket @Big Wally Unfortunately for CPJ he has to play every other UGA game at that dump of a stadium at Tech, where he is winless.

@TOJacket @Big Wally I agree 100%, beating Tech is so easy nowadays it shouldn't even count in the win column.  It is like playing a JV team.  The only thing worse than your football team is your financial situation.  Wrote that check yet?
