What are Georgia’s and Tech’s national title odds? Glad you asked

I believe Kirby Smart is saying, "Alabama's odds are way up here." (Rob Saye for the AJC)

I believe Kirby Smart is saying, “Alabama’s odds are way up here.” (Rob Saye for the AJC)

Early odds to win the 2016-17 college football national championship are out. Do you want to know now how one major oddsmaker sees it playing out or would you rather be surprised.

(I know you would keep reading.)

Bovada released its first set of futures odds for 49 schools, most from “Power 5” conferences. I’ve listed all 49 below, but here are the significant ones:

• Alabama (surprise!) is an early favorite at 7-1 to win what would be its fifth national title in eight years. This no doubt will bother coach Nick Saban, who’s probably already fretting about keeping his team focused after Monday’s championship win over Clemson.

• Clemson has the second-lowest odds by a wide margin at 15-2. (These odds are pretty close to Alabama’s when you consider the Crimson Tide’s odds equate to 14-2. I was good in math.)

• The next closest odds belong to Baylor, Michigan and Ohio State at 12-1.

• LSU is the second-highest SEC team listed at 14-1. Florida State is the second-highest ACC team at 16-1.

• Georgia’s opening title odds in the first season under Kirby Smart: 33-1.

• Georgia Tech’s odds: Way down at the end of the pack at 100-1.

• Miami’s odds in the first season under former Georgia coach Mark Richt: 66-1. So according to this, Smart’s title chances are twice as good as Richt’s.

• The only non-Power 5 schools listed are independent Notre Dame (14-1) and Houston (33-1) of the American Athletic Conference.

This is obviously ridiculously early to get a feel for next season but that hasn’t stopped anybody from putting out early rankings before — or wagering. Overall, they seem about right to me.

Here’s the complete list of Bovada’s odds:

  • Alabama*                      7/1
  • Clemson**                    15/2
  • Baylor                           12/1

You said"• The only non-Power 5 schools listed are independent Notre Dame (14-1) and Houston (33-1) of the American Athletic Conference."

You'r wrong. Boise State of the Mountain West is also listed.Notre Dame is usually considered a P5 even though it's an independent. Independent BYU is listed. Some consider it a P5 some a G5.

Kirby offered some coaches a job at Ga. I don't think Saban really cares. If someone can pay the assistants better than Alabama, so be it. A few extra thousand dollars means a lot to assistants. There are probably 100 coaches out there that would jump at the chance to coach at Alabama. Saban has his pick of the best. Assistant coaches move up by learning from the best. They take all of that experience then apply their own techniques/philosophies to develop into successful HCs. I don't think any assistant copies a head coach. Smart will bring with him an attitude of winning and how it's done. He won't be Saban but his coaching success will be flavored with Saban. Smart lured away one of Arkansas's best. If he is successful at Ga. he will be gone in 2 years. He won't be an assistant anymore, he will be a head coach. So goes the coaching merry go round.

The gloves are off between Nick and Kirby. Jr. tried to hire Cochran and Tosh from Bama and did hire Mel and the guy that was in charge of going for carryout at lunch.

Kirby...don't F with Nick sport.

What's this I read?.........McElwaine is going to be the best SEC coach off the Saban tree? Say it isn't so?........pretty soon it will be called the SEC.....Saban's Ex Coaches?

@TOJacket And Saban will still be the only one winning the conference until he retires.

First day on the job and Kirby already laid the smack down on two excuses that persisted for years under Mark Richt:  1)  The drug policy.  Is it just me or did Richt always try to take credit for this?  Turns out it was way over his head and had nothing to do with him.  I'm glad Kirby was forthcoming about that.  Rules are rules and this shouldn't be a disadvantage if everyone follows them.  2)  INJURIES.  Said Kirby:  "We’ve gotta get more depth. We’ve gotta be able to survive a couple injuries, because it’s gonna happen, it’s inevitable."  Thank God we finally have a coach who realizes he is coaching tackle football and not a croquet team.  A++ for Kirby's first day.  Things are looking up.

@dawg fan Nice to have a head coach that realizes we have to recruit quality linemen.

That would be the great Coach Fish Fry....

@Grant1296 Well if your team isn't in the FBS, it's hard to win the FBS NC?....come on Grant? Your greatest defensive coach ever hired him to win him a ring!

@TOJacket Yes, unlike a coach who relies on cut blocks and chop blocks to move the ball.  I hope Kirby will let Rocker teach the ole face mask in the lower vertebrae trick to put a quick end to that nonsense.  It doesn't feel good at all and the cut blocks cease almost immediately after it is administered.  I doubt Richt had the stones to do it.  It would be too mean.

@Grant1296 Highest SAT average in CFB the nation........nothing else need be said Grant. You know that.......what is the average of Special admits on the dawgs? I bet they had special admits in Statesboro too? Are you keeping up?

@dawg fan @TOJacket Isn't Coach Rocker one of those cheating low-life Auburn players........I mean that's what you humps say all the time?......him and Vince,huh?

dawg fan
dawg fan

@TOJacket It's not cheating.  When the O-linemen dives at your knees like a coward and takes your legs out from under you your facemask is going in their back regardless.  If you don't want a facemask in the back don't cutblock.  Simple as that.  This technique I'm talking about simply insures that the facemask is planted squarely in the coward's spine with maximum force.  Injury is highly unlikely but brief debilitating pain is a strong deterrent to cowardly cutblocks.  Hire a real football coach who wants to teach real blocking and tackling instead of this option nonsense and you won't have to worry about this.

TOJacket
TOJacket

@dawg fan @TOJacket I thought you had a little actual football knowledge....UGA was hit with more chop-block penalties than Tech.....but as usual, bad coaching in Athens? Maybe you guys can work on your cut-blocking skills on your own time?

Buschleaguer

@TOJacket@Grant1296

So by your logic its the Coordinators that should take credit for the Titles not the Head Coach.Maybe this is why CPJ is Still the Offensive Coordinator/head coach at TECH.I guess Smart should have named himself Defensive Coordinator/head coach.

TOJacket
TOJacket

@Buschleaguer @TOJacket @Grant1296
No, I'm saying I give credit to Erk....a great coach who surrounded himself with a great OC, and I doubt CPJ would have gotten the HC job had he not previously "earned" it.........not sure Kirby has earned a damn thing because his boss is one of the greatest defensive coaches in history........CPJ never held Erks hand.

Buschleaguer
Buschleaguer

@TOJacket @Buschleaguer @Grant1296 So CPJ with 2 years of brilliance at a community College for experience dazzled Russell so much ,he hired CPJ to coach D-line in 1983.But as in most cases it's the players that make some coaches , Tracy Ham  as your QB would help any OC become an offensive genius. That is why CPJ's Offense was called the HAM-Bone.

Too bad CPJ has never had a QB as talented as Ham at Tech.

TOJacket

@Buschleaguer @TOJacket @Grant1296 Kind of like Walker did for Dooley and Belue?.......we will never compete for NC's.....hell UGA can't even compete for them....I want a competitive team full of real student athletes......and maybe beat the humps every then and now, that's not asking a lot is it?

Buschleaguer

@TOJacket @Grant1296

So what are you saying TO .Tech would win a Quiz Bowl of college football 2015( they sure did not win one playing football this year.)

TOJacket
TOJacket

@Buschleaguer @TOJacket @Grant1296 No what it means is we can win the 2014 Orange Bowl and set rushing records against the 3rd best SEC team and then afterwards kick their a$$ at a Quiz Bowl too........"Student Athletes"

Buschleaguer
Buschleaguer

@TOJacket

Wish it could go back to the real student athletes competing in college sports , but now college football and basketball are just the minor leagues for the pros.

@dawg fan Funny, I don't recall Alabama having to play without their star RBs and WRs.  I don't recall McCarron going down with a season ending injury like Murray did.

It makes for a good sound byte, but that's it.

No one is winning the SEC without their star players for more than maybe a game or two, including Saban.   Not only is Alabama dialing in #1 recruiting classes almost every year, but they are able to keep them on the field.

dawg fan
dawg fan

I'm not worried about championships right now.  I'm worried about reversing a culture of mediocrity and softness. I'm worried about showing up EVERY WEEK focused and ready to play, not just when everyone is feeling good and the bounces are going our way.  I'm worried about fighting through adversity and not folding like a freaking tent when we face a team that is every bit as big and strong as we are.  These are the things I want to see improvement on in 2016.  If we do that the rest will take care of itself.

Given that teams like Clemson/Houston probably have to run the table to get into  the playoff, you're much better off just parlaying the money line every week with them.
