Richt to Miami: Stunning but great move for both parties

Georgia said goodbye to Mark Richt wjhen it fired him, now he’s saying goodbye to Athens. (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

I didn’t think Mark Richt would coach again. If he did coach again, I figured it wouldn’t be at a major Power 5 conference program like Miami but something more manageable and intimate. But apparently the call from home was too strong to resist, and presumably so was the dissatisfaction with the way things ended in Athens.

Multiple reports are reporting that Richt, who fired from Georgia Sunday, reached an agreement Wednesday night to take the coaching job from the Miami Hurricanes, his alma mater. The deal was first reported by CanesInSight.com and later confirmed by ESPN, but it hasn’t been confirmed by the university.

For what it’s worth: Miami is scheduled to come to Atlanta next season to play Georgia Tech, but the date hasn’t been set yet.

Richt seemed like a man at peace at a news conference Monday. He talked about how much he missed having a more hands-on approach to his football team, coaching quarterbacks and calling plays, neither of which he did in recent years with the Bulldogs. But the suddenly absent pressures of not recruiting or being the CEO of a major-college program looked good on him. He talked about how much he was looking forward to exhaling, enjoying time with his wife and living in Athens.

OK. I fell for it.

Assuming this deal goes through — and all of the financial aspects reportedly are in place for both Richt and a significantly increased budget for his coaching staff — it’s a home run for the Miami program, which gains instant credibility.

As for Richt, it’s a big challenge and not too dissimilar to when he came to Athens in 2001, when Vince Dooley hired him to bring the Bulldogs back to SEC glory. But while the Miami program is no longer buried under NCAA probation, it never has fully recovered from sanctions. The Hurricanes fired coach Al Golden this season, which included a 58-0 home loss to Clemson.

The question: Was this the best choice for Richt, given how worn down he seemed after the past few seasons? Taking time off might have been the better choice. But if this is what he really wants, good for him.

Richt never struck me as a guy who wanted to coach after his Georgia tenure ended. He often spoke of coming to Athens with the idea of Georgia being his final job. But clearly being fired didn’t sit well with him and there are some unresolved issues in his mind, things he still wants to accomplish. Now he’ll have that opportunity.

On a far less important note: Georgia likely needs a coach for the bowl game. Any volunteers?

Well no kidding Jeff, you missed it again! Richt was far better a Coach than you and lots of others gave him credit for. Better yet, he is energized now and I hope he is super successful.

Shorter Jeff Schultz: "Damn, I was wrong again.  Good thing my management doesn't hold me accountable for the pathetic percentage of my predictions that actually prove to be true."

You could have saved some valuable column inches for much needed ad revenue, Jeff.

Prediction : After 3 years as Georgia coach, Kirby Smart will be fired and fans will wish they had Richt's winning record. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it !

Jeff,

You really are an idiot. I think you are burned out and should take a couple of years off. You seem worn down. How about you take a job at a small town weekly newspaper?  OK? Oh yeah... can you take the AD with the class of a Gator with you?

So---does Richt get all of his severance pay from GA AND another fat salary form Miami?

First you agitate to have him fired and now you begrudge him getting another job.

I think he landed more upright out of this situation than Georgia did.

Jeff after hearing your synopsis on 92.9 earlier this week about Richt not wanting to coach again and how he seemed at peace with himself, I think the AJC should get you tested for drugs. You are clueless.

Richt will turn that program around.  He recruited so well in Miami, now it is his backyard.  Mark my words:  the Hurricanes will go 9-3 at some point in the next two or three seasons and will continue to go 9-3 thereafter for several more years.  A marked improvement!

Love the morons who think Schultz and Bradley are responsible for Richt getting fired.  LMAO.  I bet these people blame others for everything that goes wrong in their lives.  No accountability.  It's always someone else's fault.  Good holy grief how pathetic.

@DawgFan. Exactly, one of the great conspiracies of all time. Much like our esteemed Prez blaming the shootings in Cal on guns and not the people pulling the trigger.

A greater move would have been that Richt still be Georgia's coach and McGarity run out of town, but you, Bradley, a handful of rich-a$$ boosters - that demand a ROI but have a warped idea of what true 'value' is - along with a weak-kneed Unverstiy President, have seen to it that my Alma-Mammie is gonna head down the sh$t-chute for the next three to eight years. Of course, assuming you guys still have jobs at AJC, you will figure out a way to claim you knew it all the time.

@FamilyDivided  You don't have to be a know it all to know that Richt underachieves and chokes in big games.  You just have to watch football and live in reality.  You are way beyond sad.

@DawgWhistle  Why don't you RIcht crybabies explain to us what Richt's "true value" was and why he needed $4 million a freaking year to give us that value?  All you do is whine and cry.  Explain it to us.

Hey Schultzy, here is a suggestion. Why don't you be head coach for the bowl game and name Bradley your OC. I'm sure the Monday morning qb'ing you do with the 20/20 hind site the two of you have, you would outshine any coach in the country that has to make immediate game time decisions!

dawg fan
dawg fan

@FamilyDivided  Like "immediate game time decisions" are why we lost to the only two ranked teams we played this year by a combined 52 points.  A freaking orangutan could have been our coach and it wouldn't have made any difference.  Big games and championships are won on the practice field, in the weight room and in the film room.  Mark RIcht did a poor job of preparing his team for big games year after year.  Good luck to your hero in Miami and good riddance to you.

I am actually a big CPJ fan ,from his days at Ga.Southern and Navy. Refer to earlier comment this week. Just making comment to tick you off. On the other hand it is debateable who is the worst coordinator Schotty or Roofy.

TOJacket

@Buschleaguer @TOJacket @FamilyDivided CPJ always does more with less.....last 3 games against Richt with better athletes....2-1 all decide by 6 points and 2 went to OT.......you think Richt is better than CPJ?......right

@Buschleaguer @TOJacket @FamilyDivided I have never been a Schotty....his dad was a winner, but he doesn't seem to have the mojo....Actually, Roof has had our D as good as its been in a while and we couldn't find an offense?

As far as who coaches the bowl game ,I hope they let Pruitt coach it,along with announcing his extension to stay as DC at UGa. I personally do not want Coach BOOM to have anything to do with coaching the Dogs Defense. He would be a short timer and leave as soon as another HC opportunity came along.I hope he takes a job back in the BIG 12 or stays at the Barn.

What exactly is "doing more" in a 3-9 season? A lesser coach wouldn't have beaten Alcorn?

"We almost won with less talent."

Or "We almost got blown out."

It can work either way when you're adjusting reality.

You lost.

Since Georgia has shown they have no loyalty for their winningest coach, I don't blame Richt for leaving town and UGA's joke of an offer to stay in the program somewhere.

Loyalty is a two way streak, and Georgia has shown they have none.

@Buschleaguer @Derwin0 The lack of loyalty comment was to Shultz's comment of "falling for" Richt saying he wanted to live in Athens for his retirement.

@dawg fan @Derwin0 2005 is right at the 10 yr. mark.  Didn't Georgia win that one?

Is that why you specified 10?  Because you don't want the year prior to undercut your argument?  As well as the ones before that.

Came within a few seconds in 2012 as well.

@TOJacket @Derwin0 @dawg fan Actually he's not my coach, I went to Tech.  But I can appreciate a good coach, especially after growing up watching Georgia football in the 70's & 80's.

@Derwin0 2015 marked our 10th season in a row of excuses and pointless Mark Richt football.  Nobody on Earth cares what happened in 2005 except you and the Fan Club.  It's been all downhill since with embarrassing loss after embarrassing loss and pointless bowl games.  He was always "5 yards away" from everything.  I don't even know why I'm arguing about this anymore with you clowns.  It's absolutely unbelievable how you clowns can't move on.  Mark Richt is gone forever and he ain't coming back.  Thank God and Greyhound for it too because he was a choke artist and an underachiever.  Go root for the U if your hero is so important to you and leave us alone.  You won't be missed.

@Derwin0 LOL.  Nice back pedal attempt.  You didn't say anything about Schultz.  Your exact words were: "Since Georgia has shown they have no loyalty for their winningest coach . . ."  Where exactly does Schultz fit in to that equation?  Once again, please stop wasting our time with your crybaby babble over your hero Mark Richt getting fired.  Go root for the U and leave us alone.

@Derwin0 If we re-enter the Goff years Kirby will be fired and we'll give someone else a shot to get it done.  It's called ACCOUNTABILITY.  Look it up in a dictionary.  This isn't a charity.  This is a business.  You and those like you need to get a grip on reality.

@Derwin0  Over the past 10 years UGA paid Richt around $30-35 million to deliver Belk, Liberty and Independence bowls and be an all around swell guy.  Do you have any idea how much money that is? Do you live on the planet Earth?  I'd say we've been more than loyal to him and then some.  Please take the pity party to Coral Gables and stop wasting our time with your bitter crybaby nonsense.  Thanks.

dawg fan

@TOJacket Yes, spike the ball, especially when your quarterback is telling you that needs to happen like Murray was.  It also helps to not give up 350 yards rushing in a big game like that and to stop teams on 3rd down but things like this are lost on the Fan Club. I really don't think they understand the game of football that well.  They're too busy reading biographies on their hero or something to learn about it.

Buschleaguer

@Derwin0

15 Years at university is not a complete lack of loyalty, Millions of dollars paid in salary and the good will of fans like you and the majority of UGa fans ,even the ones who wanted Coach Richt to be replaced. Have not seen many on this site who have not been willing to thank Coach Richt for all that he as done in positively representing the university and preparing his players to be successful men after football .
