Short takes: Jackets lose Thomas, fumble nine times (yes, nine)

Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas is questionable for the Georgia game. (AP photo)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Looking for a recap of the misery in Georgia Tech’s 38-21 loss to Miami? Click here to take you to the full column on MyAJC.com.

Below are my three “short takes” on the game:

1. NO THOMAS, NO CHANCE: I’m not sure how big of a chance Georgia Tech was given to upset Georgia next week, anyway. But if quarterback Justin Thomas can’t play, they have no shot. Thomas drove the Jackets to a touchdown and a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game but then he left with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Coach Paul Johnson said Thomas hit his head on the turf but said he didn’t have a concussion. Johnson walked slowly and stiffly from the locker room to the bus afterward. He confirmed hitting his head but wouldn’t say what the injury was, adding, “I’m fine.” Thomas’s exit meant the Jackets, who had already lost No. 2 quarterback Tim Byerly early in the season to a knee injury, had to turn to original third-stringer Matthew Jordan, a redshirt freshman. The results were disastrous. The Jackets had four turnovers in their next six possessions as Miami scored 24 straight points after a 7-7 tie. Two of the turnovers were by Jordan (fumble, interception). Tech’s defense isn’t good enough to win games by itself so it certainly can’t win if its offense is a picture of dysfunction.

2. STUMBLES, BUMBLES AND FUMBLES: Georgia Tech fumbled nine times. NINE. Only two were lost, but … nine? Even with the wet conditions in south Florida, that’s absurd. A major college football coach shouldn’t have to teach players how to not fumble. But it has been a problem for the Jackets all season. Georgia Tech entered the week tied for fifth in the nation with 11 fumbles lost (24 fumbles total). Hey, there’s still time to lead the world! So the nine total and two lost on Saturday bring their season totals to 33 fumbles overall and 13 lost. Jordan fumbled at the Hurricanes’ 3-yard-line, ending a certain scoring drive. Miami then drove 97 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing Georgia Tech possession, running back Patrick Skov fumbled at the Tech 46. The ball was returned 45 yards by the Hurricanes’ Ufomba Kamalu, who fumbled into the end zone but it was recovered by teammate Jermaine Grace for another touchdown. So the game went from 7-7 to 21-7 Miami in a span of 2:25.

3. THE JOHNSON QUESTION: Some Georgia Tech fans want Paul Johnson fired. I’m going to assume, however, that these are the same Tech fans who wanted Johnson fired last year or the year before back. Firing Johnson makes zero sense now for two reasons: 1) Tech is coming off a season in which it went 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. While this season has been a disaster, justifying a firing now is nonsensical; 2) Financially, Tech can’t possibly take the hit a firing would cause. Johnson’s contract was given a four-year extension after last season, effectively signing him through the 2020 season at $3.02 million per year. So he has five years left on his deal. Do the math. For what its worth, there are less expensive buyout options that kick in after 2017 (two more seasons).

Word out of Baton Rouge is ole Les could be a goner.  A national title.  Two SEC titles.  They don't seem too impressed that he's doing better than Gerry Dinardo did.  According to the Mark Richt Fan Club as long as you surpass your predecessors you're golden.  Mark Richt just needs more time.  LOL.  In the meantime, see you at the Taxslayer Bowl.  We are a joke.

It's UGA/Tech week!!!  Can't you just feel the excitement!!!  This game will be an embarrassment to the game of football.  If there is any way for both teams to forfeit we should consider pursuing that option.  Both teams seem to be mailing it in.  I'm seriously questioning whether I will waste precious moments of my life watching this garbage.

Where's that OH:IO But-eye??? I see even Michigan is favored over the But-eyes this week. My, My, how things do change when a team has been exposed. Danny(the laughing hyena) Kanell has also had his knowledge of football exposed. He had already proclaimed OSU as the National Champion. OSU could finish with 3 straight losses. Ya gotta love it!!

Bucky loses to Big Blue and UGa beats Tech ,could we have a Bucky-eye vs UGa Crapital One Bowl.

@Buschleaguer @TideDawg  What's the order of selection for bowls in the Big 9.5 conference?? Ga. may end up ranked ahead of OSU. Wouldn't that send old Bucky into orbit?? Isn't it time for Urban to start having health problems? I know that loss must have made him sick!!

Tech vs George is going to be the most boring rivalry game of the week.  Two terrible teams falling over themselves, fumbling and bumbling with a NOON KICKOFF.  What a gas!

@Hell Horsey  Rivalry games are not about won loss records. It's about kids that have competed against each other since Pop Warner football and High School. However it would be nice if both teams came in undefeated, or at least relevant in their conferences, so they could play for something other than hate for each other and bragging rights.

@TideDawg Im not so sure that is true anymore. Maybe 30 years ago.

@TideDawg I can't believe I'm saying this but I think Tech has played a tougher schedule than we have.  This game most certainly isn't abut won loss records.  We might be the worst 8-3 team in history. You have to think Tech will be fired up for this one and very much believing they can pull off the upset.  We'll be flat and uninspired, just like our head coach.  Not sure why the Disney Dawgs have already put this one in the W column.  We'll see.

Two things I'm sick of hearing: 1. Losing Nick Chubb is the reason for offensive failures at Georgia. That ain't tha reason and everybody that follows football knows it. An OC fits the offense to the talent he has.  2. Paul Johnson talking about  how well they played LAST YEAR!! It's like walking up to the first tee and some guy is telling you how well he played last week as he hits two out of bounds.

Sounds like Les Miles IS in trouble at LSU. That will be a great job.

Cowherd says the next USC HC will be from the Big 12 so that would have to be Stoops or Gundy.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie  Is USC going to pirate somebody else's coach? How shameful.:o)) Oklahoma and Oklahoma State both have unlimited resources so money will not be the problem. The only reason either coach will leave is prestige and ego. As far as prestige goes, I think Oklahoma is on a level with USC. The other USC...in the SEC, will end up giving their interim coach that job.

Buschleaguer

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

I heard on some Radio Show(Finebaum or some other MotherShip show) that USC was looking to get Bill O'Brian to leave the NFL for USC.

I kinda miss Bucky, too bad for him and the oh:io state ,not even playoff material in 2015. Not even the b1g playoff. Hope Sparty does not blow it at nittany state this week .or Bucky will be back saying ohio state is playoff material. the b1g may be the Power 5 conference on the Outside looking in this year if Oklahoma and Notre Dame run the table.

OK GT Bob I concede to your superior knowledge. Trying to get through to you is like trying to convince a democrat that Obama is not good for this country.  You're satisfied with your coach, that's all that matters. What I say doesn't mean anything. You are a surprising football fan and PJ is a great coach. I am mistaken about the superiority of his offense. All major college coaches should be switching to that offense immediately.

He'll probably think you're serious and get the big(ger) head.

GTBob
GTBob

@TideDawg There isn't a single politician on either side of the aisle right now that is good for this country. Now back to football.

It has nothing to do with superior knowledge. The offense is just an offense. I'm not sure why that is so hard to understand. If it is executed well then it works well. If not, it looks terrible. Just like a pro style, air raid, or spread option offense. Claiming it simply doesn't work no matter how it is executed is just silly when there are plenty of examples to the contrary.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@GTBob @TideDawg  Doesn't every offense depend on execution?? Execution depends on coaching and talent. Nick Saban didn't like the Tide's offense so he brought in Kiffin to change it. At times he still doesn't like it but he had the guts to bring in someone smarter to fix it because he coaches the entire team and assistants and can't concentrate on just offense. Saban is defensive minded but he still brought in Kirby Smart to run the defense and before that Pruitt.

GTBob
GTBob

@TideDawg Navy has probably played a tougher schedule than UGA. But yes, Navy has had some good teams and GT has had some good teams.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@GTBob @TideDawg  And, in what division do you cite those examples? Oh, you mean Navy....tough schedule too!

GTBob
GTBob

@TideDawg Saban's approach is fine, that doesn't make it the only approach. Some coaches are heavily involved in the offense or defense. CPJ is one of them. He never has been just a CEO head coach and he never will be.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@GTBob @TideDawg  Well Bob, you're right. They have played Colgate, East Carolina, UConn, Air Force, Tulane, South Fla., SMU, Tulsa, Army.

GTBob

@TideDawg That looks pretty similar to UGAs schedule if you remove Alabama and Florida. Actually, leave Florida in there. They barely beat FAU in overtime.

Funny how OVIO has disappeared isn't it.  What a gutless coward. Scared to show his face after OSU was exposed (and finally played a decent team).

OVIO - the gutless coward.

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie If we have a bad year next year I may need it. What he has done this year is actually pretty impressive after an awful first game.

Just useless and embarrasing game and season for GT.  What a disgrace to the name of the school.

swimfin2
swimfin2

He was already making 2.6 million a year. What would you have bumped him up to? 3 million was a modest raise and is actually a modest salary for a head coach at this level who is also the OC.

Hey Bob he shouldn't have been given an extension period. And 5 years was beyond stupid. no other program would take him. Aside from a service Academy! Funny tj?f navy and ga southern are both tons better than gt. Ad should be canned. Just wait til next year. Gt wins 5 games and u and y hat idiot super and moron stein will be saying he increased his win total by 2 games!! You pj apologists have always been a joke. Now you resort to talking about dukes failures instead of paula Johnsons. You learned that tactic from Obama and Hillary?

GTBob
GTBob

@swimfin2 So you are saying that our AD should not have given CPJ an extension during one of the greatest seasons in program history, with two years left on his contract, and with the big money donors breathing down his neck to get it done? Im not sure you live in the real world.

GTBob
GTBob

@Big Wally The real world where you give coaches extensions for positive performance.

Why are paying customers of this site having to use a TECH site to comment on the UGa /GSU game? How about putting a column out before Monday on the game. Does not have to be by JSchultz ,but any one on the AJC sports staff. The DawgNation site is just not enough.I guess it just furthers the complaints by Ga.Southern fans and alumni that the Ajc just ignores their football program.

@Buschleaguer: "Why are paying customers of this site having to use a TECH site to comment on the UGa /GSU game?"

I made a similar observation earlier in the blog.

Yours is a legitimate question; therefore, you'll get no answer from AJC, which has sunk to unprecedented lows these past few months.

TideDawg
TideDawg

I'm proud of GSU and the fight they put up against Georgia. However, they proved once again that the triple option doesn't fair well against a disciplined defense. GSU was great, but when it came down to winning, the option failed. PJ take note! A good coach adapts his game plan and coaches the talent he has. You can't fit a square peg in a round hole. If GT doesn't make a change they will become totally irrelevant in the ACC. That doesn't mean you have to fire PJ but the Tech AD could say he should get an OC and diversify the offense. But, I don't think PJ could handle that very well. If PJ doesn't like that....he could always quit!

DawgNole
DawgNole

@GTBob @DawgNole Did I say your offense doesn't work? There you go, putting words in my mouth again.

Hairy Dawg

It cause the offense is high school and gimmickey. It not a real offense like Dawgs run to get players into NFL.

If it was good then they run in NFL but it not seen in NFL cause it no good.

GTBob
GTBob

@TideDawg lol. You want the Tech AD, who has no experience playing football at all and came from a school without a football team to force our head coach with 30 years of experience and multiple coach of the year awards to make changes to his offense? Yeah, good luck with that. That triple option that has no chance of working seemed to work fine in overtime about a year ago in Sanford stadium.

DawgNole

@GTBob @TideDawg

Yup--and that was about a year ago. GT seemed to be a decent team about a year ago, too.

Tech can thank CMR for the game even getting to Overtime last year. CPJ can mute some of the Noise about his future by out coaching CMR again and beating the Dogs.

GTBob

@Buschleaguer Maybe, but CMR can thank the referees for that game going into overtime as well.

GTBob

@DawgNole How could we possibly have been a decent team last year if our offense simply doesn't work, regardless of who is running it?

Buschleaguer

@GTBob

Just remembering the stupid time out CMR called as the play clock was running out, that gave Tech time to set up the tying FG and avoid a delay of game penalty .

GTBob

@DawgNole I wasn't claiming you did. I was pretty much addressing TideDawg who has decided that it is impossible for our offense to work at this level no matter who is running it.
