Hawks add Splitter, re-sign Millsap but had to let Carroll go (updated)

It never was realistic that the Hawks would be able to keep both Paul Millsap and DeMarre Carroll from leaving in free agency, and it was even more clear that re-signing Millsap was the higher priority. But as tough as it was seeing the popular Carroll leave for Toronto on Wednesday, this figure should help ease the Hawks’ pain: $60 million.

That’s what the Raptors will pay Carroll over the next four seasons. It effectively raises his annual salary from about $2.4 million to $15 million. Nothing against Carroll, a great defensive player who developed a nice offensive game this season. But he’s not a $15 million a year player. Al Horford was the highest paid Hawk last season at $12 million.

But Carroll’s loss hurts. Here are some early offseason thoughts on the Hawks.

UPDATE (6:40 p.m.): Millsap had a reported four-year, $80 million offer from the Orlando Magic but instead re-signed with the Hawks for three years and $58.938 million ($19.646 million average), according to Chris Vivlamore. Why take less? Because the third year of the deal is actually a player option, meaning Millsap can — and almost certainly will — hit the free agent market again after two seasons, when the NBA salary cap is higher than now. Millsap will make $38.446 million in the first two years of the deal, doubling what he made over the last two ($19 million).

• The Hawks acquired 6-11 power forward/center Tiago Splitter from San Antonio. Specifics of the trade have not been announced but the Hawks reportedly did not have to part with any current roster player because the Spurs were mostly interested in clearing salary cap space. Splitter represents a significant upgrade for the Hawks up front over Pero Antic (who signed with a team in Turkey). He can start with Horford when the Hawks go “big” or come off the bench. However…

• Pending other moves, the Hawks have a hole at small forward. If the team re-signs Millsap as expected — they reportedly have equaled Orlando’s max offer of four years at $20 million per season — they can’t really go with a starting front line of Horford-Splitter-Millsap because Millsap can’t defend the “3” spot. The Hawks could start Thabo Sefolosha at small forward but he will be returning from a broken leg and coach Mike Budenholzer might prefer him coming off the bench, as he did most of this season.

• The Hawks inherit the final two years of Splitter’s contract at $8.5 million and $8.25 million, respectively. But they’re in good shape, salary cap-wise, pending Millsap’s status and any other moves.

For now, I like the Splitter deal and hate to see Carroll leave but the Hawks couldn’t keep him at that price.

Of course we will miss Carroll, BUT we have a growing back up point,  and we now have real beef up front with Splitter.

Haraway Jr. will provide the 3 pointers Carrol was throwing up... BUT ALL will have to make up for a great , " go get the ball attitude" that Carrol had.  He was the Junk Yard Dog for a positive reason !

Carroll was the backbone of the Hawks.  He was a defensive stopper, and his offence was major.  He kept the Hawks afloat in many a games last season, and brought attitude to the court.

We'll miss him and his contributions!

Losing a mediocre player will be crushing? Are you serious? Losing a great player, maybe, but mediocre? Come on people. In regards to the Hawks transactions during free agency, I'm not really impressed and unless they come up with someone that can at least produce somewhat in the vacated small forward slot. I guess the big free agency grab for the Hawks was re-signing Milsap. Splitter would have been a good add-on with last years team, but even with he and Hardaway Jr., I just don't see any progress. But we'll see what happens, still should be a competitive team.

After the 4-game embarrassing sweep with the Cavs, I said the Hawks were "one and done" with success.  That is even more true right now.  Losing a mediocre player like Carroll off this team will be crushing.  The Hawks will be projected to finish 7-8-9 in the East when the season begins.  Back to the ranks of "also rans" again.

Would love to add Tobias. I think he would do well. Much better player at both ends of the court than Hardaway, jr. anyway.

The best available 3 is Tobias Harris. Go get him, Coach Bud.

And why Splitter?

I know somebody in ownership thinks and has always thought the Dale Murphy/Chipper Jones luvin' redneck fans won't come to see games if there aren't light colored individuals on the team...

But, just win, baby! Stop chokin' like dogs every postseason! Then they'll come.

Intelibird

@Wilbo That's funny!  I don't think Splitter is going to appeal much to "redneck fans".  By the way, Golden State had lots of "light colored individuals" and you will never catch this freckle faced boy cheering for those sissies.

Just win is right!  White, black, brown, purple.  Coach Bud knows what he is doing. Relax, man!

@Wilbo  The only thing Splitter accomplished by leaving the Spurs and coming to Atlanta is more championship rings will be lost.

Love Carroll but him getting $60 million for 4 years is why I do not purchase tickets.

Out of control spending just like government.  And just like government, it falls back to the little guy.

Wilbo

@TheTruthHurttz Government spending does not fall back to the Little Guy. The highest 1% of total wage earners earn about 19% of all total US income, but pay more than 30% of all US federal income taxes. Don't believe the buhshiit you hear in the socialist media, wealthy people pay almost all income tax, the bottom 50% of wage earners pay about 5% of all federal income taxes.

The Little Guy doesn't pay squat!

Intelibird

@Wilbo @TheTruthHurttz Truthhurttz probably goes to alot of Braves games.  You can buy tickets all season long for $7 a pop in spite of outrageous salaries.

Don't forget about the value and great trade for Hardaway... they really have addressed every need and Carrol got waaaay over paid.... I think the team is improved big time!

WAITUNTILNEXTYEAR
WAITUNTILNEXTYEAR

@Jonathan E  Carroll is very mediocre, agreed, but he was one of two decent players on this Hawks roster.  The other being Jeff Teague.  Millsap is the most overpaid athlete in the NBA.

rumor is splitter has a lot of Brazilian in him. lol

MikeS777

Jeff what do you think about the Tim Hardaway Jr trade?  I kind of like it.  I didn't like the Hawks pick in the first round.  I wanted them to get Dekker out of Wisconsin.  Their second round picks are tied up with contracts in Europe.  Granted they gave up an extra two future second round picks for him, but Hardaway may pay more dividends in this system.

MikeS777
MikeS777

Actually I think I was wrong there.  The Hawks got the two second round picks when they traded down with Washington.  It seems they traded the 19th pick for Hardaway Jr straight up.

MikeS777
MikeS777

i like these moves.  Its the best they could do short term, and they didn't tie themselves up long term either.  Splitter will bring some toughness up front and playoff experience.  Milsap is a key piece coming back.  Reality is, with Lopez resigning with Brooklyn, there just wasn't a better option than Milsap other than maybe Aldridge.  Did the Hawks really have a chance of signing Aldridge or luring Jordan here after LA reportedly signed Pierce?  Probably not.

Aojibor

20 million for Milsap???  Feels like the deal they gave Joe "The Slow" Johnson.  DUMB move Hawks!!

MikeS777
MikeS777

@Aojibor Doesn't feel like a max contract of 6 years and $119 million they gave JJ to me. lol.  You have a better short term option?  This is essentially just a 2 year deal.

Aojibor
Aojibor

@MikeS777  Carroll would have been cheaper, plus he is more versatile and younger than Milsap.  Milsap is undersized and he's maybe an inch taller than Carroll?  Where was Milsap in the playoffs?  All that loosey Goosey play was locked up!  Merry Xmas Milsap!

@Aojibor  Only the Jon Koncak contract is more ridiculous.  Apparently no one can remember the Cleveland Cavaliers series.

Don't forget Korver will never be the same player.

@ImaNitwit  Korver is a D-League player at best.  He had a horrible playoff series (all) this year.  Good shooters don't go cold for FOUR SERIES.

Folks still whining about Ferry as if he can do better:

I must have missed the that the Hawks had the #1 overall draft and the next James, Wade, and Melo were in the 2015 draft.

I must have missed studs like Mo Williams and Drew Gooden in free agency

Mike Brown is still the best coach without a job.

None of these players have any African in them

....lol.....

There are some closet bigots on here who displaying their true "color."

Carroll, Millsap products of system...

Neither improves Hawks...but maintains status quo...

To improve, Hawks must get bigger, more dynamic...

Splitter, Hardaway address those issues...

Cost nothing...why spend money???

Draft rights to Igor Frankenstein in 2030...

What a sweet deal!!!

Warriors stuck w David Lee $15.5M...

Can't pay Draymond Green...Mo Speights...

Gerald Green, A. Bargnani, Quincy Miller...

Upside, length, shooting, scoring...

Tweak the backcourt...too timid...

slydawg

Just pay Omar Asik or Greg Monroe before giving Millsap $20 million. You have a good eye for common sense basketball team building. School the rest of these baseball fans. And I did mean baseball.

gaboy983
gaboy983

@slydawg  Monroe doesn't fit the Hawks system.  He can't shoot more than 5 ft away from the basket, that clogs the lane for Teague or Schoder drives.  Even if you move him away from the paint the defender won't follow.

Aojibor
Aojibor

Go after Javelle McGhee to backup Splitter and trade Korver for Zach Lavine.  Korver cannot created his shot.  Get Lavine for the cheap while you can, he's going to be a STAR.  You can develope the guy here in the ATL.  You need high flyers in todays NBA.

RonMexico
RonMexico

@Aojibor In what world would Minnesota be willing to make that deal? They're not going to trade their 20-year-old phenom to the Hawks for 34-year-old Korver coming off knee and elbow surgery. This isn't PlayStation.

Fun and Gun
Fun and Gun

Smart move which gives the flexibility to move Horford to the 4 when needed, the opportunity to resign Paul to play the 4 and 3, an upgrade over Pero, and the cap space to play with if Paul goes Danny Manning on us. The more boring the player the better off we are. Would love another version of Demarre after the Paul stuff finalizes i.e. Gerald Green or Draymond Green.

@huffyman You aren't familiar with the process of trades and drafts are you? Good players get traded all the time depending on the Coach/Owner weighing the pros and cons of whether they cost too much compared to what you're trying to build and other factors. Splitter is a good player and this is a good spot for him on our roster.

RonMexico
RonMexico

@huffyman They let him go because they needed the cap space to go after Aldridge, not because he can't play. If he wasn't any good he wouldn't have been an everyday rotation player for a championship team.

ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE TO HAVE A BIG GOOFY CLUTSY WHITE GUY - WTF?

HonestInformed

Absolutely insane that Danny Ferry got labeled a racist for no good reason. Shameful that he was run out of town by the liberal media and ignorant race-baiters!!

Atlanta Hawks were a better organization and had a better future with Ferry on staff...........ALL of the race-baiters and "anti-white" people (these people are the true racists in today's world) have had a negative impact on the Hawks organization!

Back on topic: Does Milsap really deserve $20M/season considering he "cannot defend the 3-spot"??

gaboy983
gaboy983

@HonestInformed  Milsap is a PF so not being able to defend the SF spot is normal.  Teague can't defend the PF  but it's not a knock on him because he's not expected to.

This situation wouldn't be much different with Ferry. Carroll clearly didn't want to be here, the Hardaway move was great, and very few people know Splitter better than Coach Bud.
