Georgia, Auburn picked to play for SEC title (so it must be true!)

Everybody makes predictions. I’m not convinced that what every sports information (media relations) director from the 14 SEC schools believe is any more valid than what the comprehensive researchers at Weekend Predictions, Inc., believe, but here goes:

It’s Georgia vs. Auburn for the SEC title!

According to the annual polling of SID’s by the Birmingham News (AL.com), Georgia will win the SEC East and Auburn the SEC West. If that’s true, the teams’ regular season meeting Nov. 14 at Auburn will represent a conference championship preview three weeks before the title game Dec. 5 in the Georgia Dome.

Here’s an excerpt from AL.com:

Auburn received three first place votes and three second-place finishes from the seven Western Division football information directors to top its division with 33 points, barely edging Alabama, which received three first-place votes, two second-place votes and one third-place finish for 32 points.

Georgia had an easier path in the East, gathering six first-place votes for 36 points. Missouri was second with one first-place vote, four seconds and one fifth for 28 points.

A school’s football information director could not vote for his school in the polls.

Georgia’s projected SEC East title in the poll is not a surprise — that’s the way most oddsmakers have it. While the Bulldogs’ lack certainty at quarterback, a strong running game and an improving defense should be enough to win a division that is expected to remain weak. The oddsmaker 5-Dimes recently released its SEC championship odds. Georgia is the highest ranked East team, but Alabama was given the edge over Auburn.

The 5-Dimes odds (West teams with W, East teams with E):

W-Alabama: +300 (3-1)
W-Auburn: +425 (4.25-1)
E-Georgia: +475 (4.75-1)
W-Mississippi: +525 (5.25-1)
E-Tennessee: +900 (9-1)
W-LSU: +1050 (21-2)
W-Arkansas: +1200 (12-1)
E-Missouri: +1400 (14-1)
W-Texas A&M: +1600 (16-1)
W-Mississippi State: +1600 (16-1)
E-South Carolina: +2600 (26-1)
E-Florida: +2600 (26-1)
E-Kentucky: +8000 (80-1)
E-Vanderbilt: +15000 (150-1)

Notice how tilted the odds are in the West’s favor. Four of the top six teams are from the West. The four longest odds are in the East.

But do you agree that Georgia will win the East?

Winning the East will be harder than the pundits make it out to be.Conference games seem to be more difficult, particularly against the teams in the same division that play each other every year.  Football fans outside the SEC want to throw dirt on the SEC but it is still the toughest conference top to bottom.

UGA will likely win the East but not definitely. UF, UT, MZ, and USC could all be a surprise team. That said, UGA could absolutely hold its own and win the West if it switched spots with a team over there. There is no gap between UGA and any team in the West whatsoever. They'd wreak havoc over there even if they didn't win it.

Im not worried about the SEC champ game at the moment....two BIG cirlces on the schedule are uf and tech.

Not good news for Georgia fans since the SEC media never seem to predict the SEC title game correctly.  The SEC East is a toss up at the moment  Georgia, the team with the most experience and depth, could win it if their QB plays well this year and they avoid key injuries to their best players again.  Tennessee could win it if they develop depth on both sides of the line of scrimmage and upset Georgia.  Florida could surprise if their young offensive linemen grow up very quickly.....I mean, very quickly, as in right now. South Carolina could win it if their QB plays well and upset the Vols.  Missouri could win it again if Georgia and everyone else gives it to them.  Kentucky could win it if God is on their side this year and plays defense for them.  Vandy could win it if God is on their side and everyone else loses their first and second teams to injury the first game of the season.....and God plays QB for them.

Schultz - You are as delusional as Obama.  Obama said  his foreign policy is a success and you say UGA will play for the SEC championship.   You AJC sportswriters are nothing but spin merchants for Richt.   His performance over the past 3 years has been abysmal and with the talent he has had over the past 10 years, he is certainly not an SEC caliber coach. Please give us UGA fams a break and tell the truth.  Richt has to go.

UGA declares themselves National Champions this time every year.  Typical puppy dog delusions.

Then sometime in September reality always sets in..........

Wow! The East winner will have two losses? Either Bama or Tn beats the Dogs and of course Spurrier will. My guess is Ga beats Bammy and wets the bed the next week against Rocky Top. It's the Richt way.

@patriotdog

Georgia could lose to Bama and still win the East by beating the Vols.  But not sure about the other way.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AS LONG AS MARK RITCH IS THE GEORGIA HEAD COACH.HE WILL FIND A WAY TO LOSE GAMES HE SUPPOSE TO WIN.THE SAD PART, HE DOESN"T CARE AS LONG AS THEY PAY HIM THE BIG BUCKS FOR DOING NOTHING BUT LOSE EVERY YEAR.PITIFUL!

@cspecial  And which team are you a fan? You are for sure not a Georgia fan. It must be frustrating knowing UGA has Mark Richt as our coach. A man of class, integrity and oh yes - a winner!! Can't wait for the season to begin!!

@cspecial Hard to scream, "IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN" when it already has...  Richt won it in 2002 and 2005.

Missouri and usc will be way down this year. Florida and Tennessee will suck as usual -- dogs win the sec east easily!

@ClubShack Florida beat the "Obama" out of Jawja last year. Tennessee lost by only 3 points while giving up a fumble recovery in the endzone to Jawja. You are full of Obama.

Have any of the people making these picks ever picked MIZZOU? Well that tells us all we need to know.

@Wreck13 It's going to take years if not decades of success for Missouri to prove to anyone that they can be competitive in the SEC. Mind share is much more meaningful in college football than actual results.

Do you save paper or just don't have to write anything when you use the same pick for the east every year and it is a flat tire.  I will say Auburn has the best coaching staff in the SEC which if they were coaching Georgia you guys would have to work harder.

WDE
WDE

@Peachs yeah they were great last year particularly the offensive genius Ol'Gus who managed to coach his team to all of 7 points vs the same defense that the Gators ran all over...can we get a amen for Ol'Gus .so you just keep on saying Auburn has the best coaching staff in the SEC maybe someone will believe you.

I like Richt and I like Saban, but both of them uncharacteristically coached their teams out of championship games last year. Fortunately or unfortunately both coaches coach Universities that consider a 2 loss season a failure. I believe that will not happen again. I would like to see both teams in the SEC Championship. Both teams have to quickly come up with championship caliber QBs, or any early losses could dictate the rest of the season. The supporting talent is there to win it all. There are no "bad" teams in the SEC. It's going to be tough!

Forget the preseason hype, the high expectations, and the buzz about going to a championship game that happens every year. Let's just show up with a dogged determination to win and see what happens. No more putting wins on the board before the games are played.

@TideDawg No bad teams in the SEC?...............what do you consider bad?

Georgia has an easy SEC schedule.  They might win the East because of this.  Richt is about as motivating as classical music. UGA always seems desperate for players and take a lot of players without much character. Richt is using the FSU thug recruiting formula. THe Bulldog Nation with their Confederate Flags love him though.

@Obazo Not   you my man are taking trolling to a new low...and we are laughing,  thanks for the chuckle.

@Obazo Not The schedule out of the West is Auburn and Alabama. That's easy?

Mutley

The most stinging indictment of Richt is last years Florida game. How can you not be ready to play your biggest rival and yes Florida is the biggest rival, not Tech. How you go into that game with everything on the line and lay one of the biggest eggs of you career and walk off the field smiling. Saban would never say Alabama was just not ready to play Auburn. Never happen never. This is what separates a winner from a pretender, Richt is just not driven to win nor is the Georgia fan base.

ImaNitwit
ImaNitwit

@Mutley  If you recall, Georgia was missing 3 of its top 4 running backs, Gurley, Michel and Henderson. Take 3 of the top 4 running backs off any team in the nation and how often do you think they would win? And, the Dawgs were playing with a fifth year senior QB that hadn't started in his first 4 seasons. He wasn't good enough to start in his first 4 seasons. Fact is, the Dawgs over achieved. If you want to blame the defense for not showing up, how about placing blame on Pruitt? I understand that Pruitt is a God, but the fact is his defense was run off the field by Florida, South Carolina and Georgia Tech. Pruitt's defense gave up 32 points to Tennessee minus Josh Dobbs. Blame Pruitt, not Richt.

@TOJacket @twentysixpointtwo @ImaNitwit @Mutley  I would also add that in the Florida game, while Dawgs did have injuries at RB, if memory serves Florida lost their starting QB Driskoll a few games earlier and had to play a red shirt freshman at QB.  The QB is no longer with the program - again- if memory serves.

Dawggie
Dawggie

@ImaNitwit @Mutley  "Overachieved?"  Sure, the team that manhandled Clemson, Mizzou, ARK, AU, and Louisville was just lucky to win those games I guess.

Truth is, UGA was very much good enough to get in the SECCG, but Richt couldn't get it done.  He lost, as usual, to 3 underdog teams, two of which were the most pitiful SC and UF teams I can recall.

And even though GT deserved its win over the Dawgs, boneheaded calls by Richt snatched away a 99% certain victory.

UGA will certainly be talented enough to get in the SECCG this season, but mark it down, a random loss to an underdog (SC?  UT?  UF?)  will keep them out.  Again.

I Love the Dawgs. I Like Richt.  But we do have a pattern here - that's just the way it is.

@Harlemdawg Nice excuse.  And if that is the case, they are not much of a football team.  Champions make sure they are ready to play when it is game time...point blank and period

@TideDawg @Harlemdawg Yep...I would agree...teams that are not championship caliber in their mindset do have a problem getting up for teams that they think they are better than instead of being ready to play.

@Mutley I would have to mention that Georgia lost the core of it's offensive line in the second quarter and went downhill from there.  When you lose your center there is not much you can do to get the rhythm working again.  Yes Richt is the one who did not have a plan B for that problem, but I am not sure there was a plan B to be had.  Georgia needs more depth on the offensive line to really be a great team.

Richt also flat out lost the game to Georgia Tech.  He admitted as much.  Georgia will either do very well this coming year or Richt may be looking for a job elsewhere.
