Short takes: Hawks seem to have lost their cool, shooting touch

Short takes on the Hawks’ 120-115 overtime loss to the Brooklyn, which evened the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

1. It’s everything: The Hawks mostly blamed their lack of pace and poor shooting for losing game three to Brooklyn. But everything abandoned them at some point in game four. Their defense fell apart in the fourth quarter when the suddenly alive Deron Williams scored 16 of his 35 points (and the Nets had 30 in quarter). The Hawks’ shooting touch abandoned them in the second half, when they blew a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter and Kyle Korver missed three consecutive three-point attempts in overtime. They also committed 18 turnovers, leading to 26 Brooklyn points. This is not your 60-win team.

2. But the Hawks’ biggest problem: Failing to protect a lead. The Hawks won so many games during the regular season in part because they knew how to protect with a lead by playing smart, taking care of the ball and not taking bad shots. But that intelligence and sense of cool wasn’t present this game. The Hawks held a 12-point lead in the third quarter and led after the period 82-74. The third-quarter leader had won every game this series. But the Hawks rushed some shots, missed open looks and had four turnovers in the fourth quarter. Defensively, it also looked like they missed Thabo Sefolosha in this game.

3. On Korver: He said he rushed some shots Monday but otherwise felt much better than he did in Saturday’s loss. Maybe. But it didn’t look like it. The Hawks’ three-point ace hit 4-of-13 from outside the arc and the team overall was 13-for-33 (39.4 percent), compared to Brooklyn’s 45.2 percent (14 for 31).

Come on guys. I know it's like Atlanta fans to go ahead and assume the worst but didn't it take the #1 seed Celtics 7 games to beat the #8 seed Hawks in 2008? What happened with that Celtics team? Oh yeah, they won the championship. Stop your pity party and start supporting your team. GO HAWKS!!

In classic Atlanta fashion the choke is on.

This is by far some of the worst officiating I have seen in quite some time. Absolutely awful...

Besides that gripe, its embarrassing when the #1 SEED can not get off a shot in 6 seconds to try and win the game in the fourth quarter. I could have swore the same thing happened last year multiple times especially in the playoffs versus Indiana.

WORK ON GETTING OFF A SHOT IN CRUNCH TIME COACH OF THE YEAR!!!!

AtL is a finesse team, not built for playoff basketball.  They'll go out in round 1 or 2.

@ClubShark I agree. The Hawks are soft as butter and Hollins is out coaching Bud. Can we see a little of Muscala and Brand so that they can bang Lopez around a little bit and use some fouls on him. Put them in when Plumlee comes in and start the hack a Shaq. Al, Milsap and Pero will not survive even if they did defeat the Nets. Bud is gonna have to go deeper into his bench.

@777-9311 @ClubShark Hack-a-Brook doesn;t quite have the same ring to it, I like the thinking :)

Throw a bigger headband over to D-Will to cover up his bald head and throw off his shot and we've got a recipe for success!!

Of course Lionell Hollins doesn;t think Lopez is a post player...  I don;t know what games he's been watching this series..  Maybe they bring back Priest Lauderdale just to stand in his way??

@SomewherenSGa Whether its a bandwagon fan or not, these fans are telling the truth, the hawks have got to play better in order to win this series.

Relax....  They have to do this to prolong the series to increase revenues.  They are using that to pay off some additional debt in order to make the sale of the team go through smooth(er).  This is big business and for anyone to say that the shareholders don't control the front office and the product on the floor is living under a rock...

@hbo38 This is not a video game. This is real life.

@Wilbo @hbo38 hence why his comment makes even more sense, to be honest. Real life is about money, and that's the bottom line.

@hbo38 "They have to do this to prolong the series to increase revenues"

You're suggesting the game was rigged? For that to be anywhere in the realm of possibility both teams would have to be in on the "fix" and so many people would know it would quickly leak out. Totally absurd.

hbo38
hbo38

@Bumper15 @hbo38 I'm no conspiracy theorist and I'm not saying anything is "rigged".....  Maybe "suggested" ???.

All, I'm saying is read between the lines in the reports you see and understand how the business side works:  *ALL* revenues from regular season are shared throughout the league, helping the small market teams.   All spoils go tot the victors once playoffs arrive.  It's  laid out in the CBA.  Maybe TV contracts work differently, but 100% of the gate goes to the home team each post season game...  I read somewhere avg profit off a home playoff game was 19 million?  I could be wrong, but still...  HUGE numbers with a lot of zeros...

Per all of the news reports, terms of the pending sale of the Hawks are not finalized "depending on how much debt the new ownership group is willing to absorb."

It helps us GREATLY short and long term to have a guaranteed additional home game in the ATL.  I'm a little disappointed they are now trying to make 2 additional games with a game 7...

El-Bey

...definitely missed Thabo on D.  Home court advantage will be their saving grace this playoff season.

Moose dominated at center in the last ten games of the season.  Now the coach keeps going to other players who simply haven't performed (Basemore, Scott, Schroder, Antic).  When they have their big trees in the middle, those easy shots stop.

I would like see the entire 2second unit in at same time with no starters, this adjustment Coach Bud should make in game 5.

Like I have said before Coach Bud stop going 2 what made the Hawks, his deep rotation, when Hawks was winning Coach Bud was going 12man rotation and his rotation was on point, now since he trying shortening his bench because playoffs the Hawks Mojo have fell off.

GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be bad enough to lose in the 2nd or 3rd round, but to lose to a team that was below .500 would just add them to the list of playoff failures by Atlanta teams. To win 60 games, and not at least make it to the conference finals could only happen to Atlanta.

The weaknesses of the Hawks have been put on display by the Nets for all to see. The Nets in 6.

Hawks suck. Teague isnt aggressive, kyle can only shoot, demarre has no offensive game, paul to small, and al has no toughness and is small.

WHAT ? The team that the AJC  sports reporters bowed to and licked their Nike's aren't performing well?  You forget this is loserville ...repeat after me.... LOSERVILLE..In reality the Nets could have won this series already with three made shots at end of game one and two

What team IS big up front other than Memphis??  Brooklyn only has Lopez..Golden State isn't very big up front either...Only thing that needs to be Big up front is DEEZ NUTS!!!

Dribble
Dribble

Think it was Barkley who commented that Atlanta won't go far because they are not very big up front.  It's starting to show.  Brooklyn's Lopez seems to give Horford fits.  Atlanta has no low post game.  Maybe that's not the style now but sure would help with some high percentage shots.  The defense still has no idea how to boxout.

DrGonzo
DrGonzo

@Dribble Uh, no. They were manic on the offensive boards last night, lots of second chances. We just couldn't hit the shots - again. They've been shooting the worst during this stretch than they have all year. That's what's killing us. They're getting into the paint and driving the lane, but firstly getting zero calls from the refs while being hacked to pieces, and secondly missing too many layups/easy buckets. They can get inside on this Brooklyn team, and I think they've been trying to do exactly that, but it doesn't help if you can't hit the shot once you get in the lane.

stiffneck
stiffneck

@Dribble Exactly.  Brooklyn has a couple of 7 footers and Lopez owned Horford the other night.  Atlanta has nobody to post up.  They just like to run, shoot a 3 pointer or have someone go for a layup and then hope it goes in or a teammate gets the rebound.  Kinda of like a pick-up game.

DrGonzo
DrGonzo

I wanted to believe. All year long I did. I thought that finally this team could get to the conference and maybe league finals. But after watching four games against a sub-.500 Brooklyn squad, we just don't have what it takes. We can't maintain leads. We can't play past the refs (while not an excuse, I will say I've never seen a more horribly called game than last night, with several phantom calls on the Hawks blowing our momentum at key moments). We can't turn on the shooting when it matters. And while I discounted it all year with the mantra of "they'll find the open man," I have to admit the Hawks need a go-to guy, a clutch guy. We just don't have it. If we make it to the 2nd round, I expect us to have a difficult if not impossible time with the Bullets.

Same old got damn Hawks.

ATLBrown
ATLBrown

This team needs to adopt Norman Dale's mantra of four passes minimum.  They are so good at getting open when the move the ball around, including down low.  Don't take the bad look at a 3, pass it one more time and hit the open player inside.  This team does that so well when they actually do it.  Get back to what you do and put this series to bed.

Section212
Section212

The rotations Bud is using when we get the lead are not working.  Every time Hawks get a 10+ point lead, Bud subs out the players who got us the lead (like he did last night with JT and Al in the 3rd qtr), and BKN then goes on a 13, 15, 18 point runs to tie the game or take the lead. Additionally, what the heck was that at the end of regulation??? 6.5 seconds and we cannot even get up a shot? I guess that answers the question that was asked about this team "Who takes the game winning shot?"  Last nights answer was "Nobody!"

BulldogBen
BulldogBen

I'll say it: Lose this series and it will be this and the Jim Leyritz homer for worst moments in ATL sports history. It'll be mentioned in every 1 vs 8 seed matchup going forward for eternity.

It'll be devastating.

That said, we should still win this thing.

DrGonzo
DrGonzo

@BulldogBen I think we will still win. Problem is now I am no longer confident we can get past the Bullets.

Wilbo
Wilbo

I've always thought 24-2 was the worst.
Glavine's chump game against the Padres. Danny Bautista's error was about as disgusting as it gets. That 48-21 whipping by the Packers was disgraceful. 2002 Chipper playing soccer w the baseball in left field gifting Barry Bonds an undeserved trip to the World Series. Hawks last year. 93 against the Phillies. There are SO INCREDIBLY DAMM MANY disgusting Atlanta postseason flops, almost impossible to choose a worst

NorthFlaFalcon
NorthFlaFalcon

@DrGonzo @BulldogBen Blowing a 20 point lead at home, in the 2nd half, and not scoring any 2nd half points, vs the 49ers in the NFC champsionship game was pretty bad too.

NorthFlaFalcon
NorthFlaFalcon

If KK makes 1-2 more of those 3's and Devon W misses that miracle shot I believe we win this one. The guys played their hearts out.  Close it out in 6 in ATL ...

Dasdguy
Dasdguy

Horfords pinky and Milsaps shoulder are still bothering them. These guys are not 100%.  Nets 'Bigs' are keeping Teauge and Schroeder out of the lanes. Our Defense is having trouble keeping Lopez from underneath the glass.

DrGonzo
DrGonzo

@Dasdguy Teague and Schroeder are getting to the lane plenty. They're just not hitting the shots - well Dennis isn't. Jeff was great last night except for missed free throws that could have helped close it out.

coops34
coops34

I understand that Teague needs rest but Dennis is struggling and Shelvin proved last year that he can perform in the playoffs.

DrGonzo
DrGonzo

@coops34 Bud has to start running the starters longer. I still don't think we've had a player get 40 minutes yet. Nearly every Nets starter has logged 40 minutes or more almost each game. They have to suck it up and get the job done.
