Mark Fox returns subtle fire at Brian Gregory before tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There were two things you could safely assume after Georgia’s Tech’s Brian Gregory said earlier this week that he was pulling for Michigan State against Georgia in the NCAA tournament and had passed along the Jackets’ past keys to success against the Dogs to the Spartans’ Tom Izzo.

1.) Georgia coach Mark Fox would be irritated by some of Gregory’s comments; 2.) Fox’s return fire would be subtle, just enough to let everybody know what he thought but not so much to distract from his team’s return to the NCAA tournament.

Confirmed, confirmed.

Having lost four straight to Tech, Fox was asked Thursday if he was concerned about anything Gregory might’ve shared with Izzo.

“I don’t know,” Fox said after a pause. “They (Michigan State) have had lot of success over there in post-season play so I’m sure coach Izzo knows how to prepare his team. I’m not sure Tech has had the same success. But they’ve had success versus our team the last couple years. We’re all trying to get any advantage we can get.”

Fox declined later to publicly expand on his comment about Tech’s overall lack of success. But the look on his face said enough. Most assumed Izzo would phone Gregory when the tournament brackets came out Sunday night, and that Gregory would be happy to help. But Fox likely felt some of Gregory’s comments, and glee with which he delivered them, were a bit over the edge.

Like: “You can quote me on this: I gave him (Izzo) everything.”

Like: “… There a lot of green blood in my veins.”

Like: “There might be debate on a lot of things. But there’s no debate on who I want to win that game.”

Fox and players arrived in Charlotte Wednesday night for their first practice and news conference Thursday. All seemed loose and in a good mood, embracing the underdog role against Michigan State. While the Spartans will be playing in their 18th straight NCAA tournament (including six Final Fours and one championship), the Dogs will play their first tournament game since 2011. They haven’t won in the tourney since 2002.

So, yes, Tech has had more recent postseason success in basketball than Georgia, reaching the national title game in 2004. But Fox can hold this over Gregory: He’s here and Gregory isn’t.

Jeff:  Is there anything more current that could be included here?  Rather than a blog this has become an archive.

This post was interesting six weeks ago, but it's time to take it down.

I dont think there is a lot the Tech coach can tell anyone about how to play basketball.  He's lucky to have a damned job now.

Tech recruits all those good players and then I don't know what happens to them!

Coach Fox would build top teams with the talent these other programs get, some just sit on the  bench. He could win a NC with a ALL Georgia players on the team. Damn Good Coach look what he has already done.

The bugs learn a lot in defeat.  That's why they're so smart.

Oh that's right they won a football game for the 3rd time since Y2K.  In other words your newly anointed teen driver was suckling his/her mothers teet and crapping green.  But of course they own this state.  Whatever losers.  The beauty is that I nor any other UGA alum will even have to humor this ridiculousness for another 5+ years given the math since 1970.

@TOJacket @birdrow Not really. Gazing over at the trade school always makes DAWGS feel better regardless of how we do.

It seems Coach Gregory must have advised Coach Izzo on how to beat Virginia. Gregory probably learned a lot in a 57-28 defeat.

Two storied programs. One plays in the cow barn and the other at the tittitop. Woohoo!!

And the dogs have won as many post season games this season as GT.

The dogs never beat a ranked team all year, what's the fuss, the quick exit is no surprise.

As bad as GT was, they still spanked the pups for the 4th year in a row.

Oh well, let's talk some football.  That is fun.

@TOJacket @1980-was-so-long-ago Be careful what you ask for.  The great comeback of 2013 at Historic Grant Field was one of our best wins ever over your bugs. And this year we get to play there again amongst a crowd that is at least 50% Dawg fans.  its great when you can play Clemson and UGA at home and have a couple of sold out games.

You UGa fans on here crying that Gregory is a bad person for doing this and that and this and that in public are butt hurt.  You act like he called a presser at the Capital building and did this for the sake of sticking it to Fox.  He didn't.  He was called by the AJC and asked a question.  Now get back to licking your wounds as Spartie kicked you to the curb.

unknown911

@SvenOttke No one is crying on this side.  The cheap whining we hear is from a team that knows well how to lose but hasnt yet learned how to win.

Izzo has been to 18 straight NCAA tournaments, won National Championships and Gregory thinks he can help Izzo?  Hilarious.

tech --- used to be big time---now, they are terrible, an embarrassment to the city---how much longer will their fans put up with this????

Same old dawgs.. One and done!  Guess Bradley's elite 8

call for UGA  is gone with the wind.. lol

Mark does worse at basketball picks than football football picks. He is

a dog through and through and SEC genius...Since 2000 the dogs

have won " 1" NCAA tournament game.. By the way, GT has at least

won 8...

Tech fans are still butt hurt that a sad excuse for a basketball team won the SEC tournament on their home court.  I'll bet the money really started flowing in for McCamish Pavilion after that!

BleedingGold
BleedingGold

@DawgnIT  Wasn't that seven years ago?  Has that been the high mark of UGA basketball since the turn of the century?

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgnIT There weren't even plans to build McCamish Pavilion yet when UGA won that game. And I'm not sure why GT fans should be upset that our Institute was nice enough to provide a venue for the SEC to finish their tournament after a natural disaster. If it were that big of a deal we would have just declined.

@DawgnIT The only major college team to win a basketball double header and did it at Tech.

Just more of Tech and their pettiness.  Moving along now.

Just for a hypothetical, lets say that UGA has an important game against a team that Colorado State plays every year. Mark Richt calls up Mike Bobo for advice. Is Mike Bobo a terrible person if he speaks about it?

TOJacket
TOJacket

@GTBob For god sake Bob.............I used to coach travel football for years and we always exchanged films with the other teams........these guys know that..............still BUTT-HURT

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@GTBob Not if he simply mentions that he helped his old coach and team with everything he knows about that opponent.  I'd be disappointed if he left the professional level by acting like a fan with the extra enthusiasm.

If coaches are going to start acting like fans within their profession I guess Grantham deserves an apology from everyone who bashed him for throat slashing at the Gator kicker.

It doesn't bother me either way.  I just enjoy watching Gregory dig his hole deeper.  I mean if Tech loses to UGA in basketball next season I'd imagine his hot seat would be fully engulfed.

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@TOJacket @DawgnIT @GTBob We tried to suggest that last week but your fellow Techies said 4-0 vs UGA didn't mean anything.  Funny how this week it means everything now that Gregory is back.

TOJacket
TOJacket

@DawgnIT @TOJacket @GTBob Well, I wouldn't think it would hurt..........I don't think CBG meant any ill-will to CMF and he meant none with his comment. I think Schultzy just wanted to be the first one to break 100 post this week. I'm not sure about the Grantham comparison?

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@TOJacket @DawgnIT @GTBob I enjoy rivalries and am not butt hurt at all by Gregory's comments.  I hope he did mean them with a subtle jab at UGA simply because he's Tech's coach.

It seems that only Spurrier gets a pass for needling opponents or rivals but I find it refreshing as long as it's healthy and not insulting on a professional level.

That said, return fire is fair game so I also give credit to Fox for not letting it ride.  I hope it results in a spirited game in Athens later this year.

As for Grantham, I thought that situation was overblown.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgnIT This has nothing to do with fans. This isn't the first time a coach gave advice to another coach about an upcoming game. Good grief.

@TOJacket

Quite frankly, I thought Schultz went into NY Daily News trolling territory with this blog.

JS "Hey Mark, do you have any answer to those nasty comments Gregory made?"

MF "What nasty comments?"

JS "You haven't heard.... Let me tell you about it....."

DawgNole

@DawgnIT @TOJacket @GTBob

No, only GTBob on the Tech side says victories over UGA don't mean anything:

GTBob March 11, 2015

Nobody cares if we beat UGA in basketball.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgNole And you still don't even know what the word lie means. It must be tough having an intelligence level lower than a 5 year old.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgNole So I am the only GT fan in history that doesn't think the UGA/GT game is important? Yeah, I don't think so. If I were a crybaby with a 5th grade mentality I would call you a liar.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgNole On a side note, you have made 8 posts in this blog. Not a single one has anything to do with basketball. Most of them are actually about me personally. While I am flattered that I take up so much of your thoughts, it is getting a bit pathetic.

DawgNole
DawgNole

@GTBob @DawgNole

Well, let's see another GT fan's post in which he/she says "nobody cares" if GT beats UGA.

Hello?

Stop lying! It does nothing at all for your shameful lack of credibility on here.

DawgNole
DawgNole

@GTBob @DawgNole

Counting posts now, are you? Talk about pathetic.

And you're "flattered" by something pathetic?

You sure about that? Or are you lying again?

If you don't like being called out for lying, stop lying.
