Weekend Mini-Predictions: Dogs, Jackets win; Tide, Ducks to finale

What could be better than Georgia going against Bobby Petrino and this composed fellow? (Curtis Compton, AJC)

Hello, I’m back and on my way to a semi-important football game in Los Angeles, where no owners are hiring search firms to submarine their own team’s playoff chances because, well, Los Angeles doesn’t have an NFL team. I’m so old that I remember when L.A. actually had two NFL teams, but then I think I burned so many brain cells during this fall’s investment season that maybe I misremember and need Arthur Blank to hire a search firm to replace me. (He’d love that.)

So I’m not going to down the list of all remaining bowl games because, really, if you care how Toledo does against Arkansas State in the GoDaddy Bowl, you’re the one who should’ve been mopping up the sewage backup in the Georgia Dome Sunday (the mother of all symbolic malfunctions).

???????????????????????????????Consider this a snack pack edition of Weekend Predictions.

Let’s begin in Charlotte, where Georgia would rather not be. Nothing against Charlotte. It’s a nice little town. It’s home to a lot of insurance companies, and that screams excitement. Charlotte also has an NFL playoff team for the second straight season, and that’s two more seasons than Atlanta.

Do you know what else is in Atlanta? The Belk Bowl. So not only did Georgia not get into a major bowl game, it didn’t even get into a major department store. Then again, after being run over by Florida, the Family Dollar Manufacturer’s Defective Gloves With Six Fingers Bowl seems about right.

Nobody would care about Georgia vs. Louisville in the Belk Bowl except for that the backdrop for this game reads like a Grisham novel. Bobby Petrino, responsible for a different kind of sewage backup with the Falcons, is the head coach at Louisville — again. Life really does repeat itself. Expect Petrino to be meeting an Auburn booster behind an airplane hangar in 3…2…1…

The Cardinals’ defensive coordinator is Todd Grantham, who was about to be run out of Athens when Petrino did everybody a favor and hired him, perhaps as his way of making amends in a 12 Step program for cretins.

This is a dangerous game for the Bulldogs, as much as a meaningless bowl game can be dangerous. After losing to Florida, blowing the SEC East title and ending the regular season by losing to Georgia Tech, I’m not sure how much Georgia players really care about this game. I know Louisville players will care because Petrino and Grantham will dip their cleats in kerosene and threaten to light their shoes laces as a motivational technique.

The line is seven points. That seems like a lot, considering I’m not even sure Georgia is going to win. But consider this a vote for Nick Chubb and little else: Dogs win but take Louisville and 7.

Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs Mississippi State: First one to 60 wins. Seriously, this would be so much better as a video game. The Other Dogs average 506 yards and 37 points a game, which Paul Johnson no doubt takes as a challenge (Jackets: 469 yards, 37 points). Amusing pregame note of the week: Tech defensive back D.J. White refers to Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott as, “Best quarterback we’ll see this year.” Wonder where that puts Jameis Winston? Take the seven points and Jackets in a straight upset.

Rose Bowl: Florida State vs. Oregon: College football’s mini-playoffs have finally arrived and this will be the first semifinal. A legal world update on Jameis Winston: He was cleared in a code-of-conduct hearing, which is what a courtroom, a jury and a real judge would be like if the court room, a jury and a real judge were manufactured by Fisher Price. End this. Quack. Ducks cover 9.

Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Ohio State: As subplots go, it’s hard to do better than Nick Saban vs. Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes were given a hall pass into the playoffs because they’re pretty good, despite having to start a third-string quarterback, and, besides, their biggest competition was two schools from the Big 12 (speaking of Fisher Price). Actual factual: Ohio State is 0-10 against the SEC in bowl games. Bammy covers 9.

This attempt at sarcasm and comedy by Schultz should be included in the Georgia Dome's sewage waste tank.

Ohio State will probably keep it pretty close up until halftime as Yeldon pounds their defense, then about  mid way through the third quarter or so Big Derrick Henry will come in and the Alabama fans will break out into their happy dance.

The real Dawgs won theirs now it is time for the faux Dawgs to do the same.

@1942MNC you mean the 3rd best team in the state won! Alright! Well let's see the true State Champs take on the better half of the big bad SEC on a much bigger stage tonight. 30-24

Richt will be outcoached again, as always. Maybe a Louisville win will get this CLUELESS HC outa here.

@AthensGaFan Richt is a winner and would be instantly offered jobs in major programs if he left. Be careful of what you wish for.......you may just get it.  I am sure Richt is tired of people like you complaining about a coach who has one of the best records at any of the major programs.

Hey, I got an idea for you.......lets bring back Goff.  I hear he is still looking for a job.  Surely anything would be an improvement over Richt.  Yea, right. You display your ignorance of what it takes to run a top program. Richt is one of the top coaches in the country.  Perhaps not top five but not far from that.

UGA wins in a walk....they will simply out talent Louisville.  UGA usually wins when their back is against the wall.

Tech has not had much luck in bowl games recently.  The only game Tech won with CPJ was against a divided dispirited USCw team - - MSU is neither.  Maybe it's the long time the opponent has to prepare.  Maybe it's the rust that builds up in Tech's offense and defense due to the long layoff.  I don't see Tech winning this game.

Good pick on the UGA game.

I actually hope GT wins tonight. Helps our SoS.

Louisville has a really good defense.  I actually see tonight's game being rather low scoring.  I think Nick Chubb will shine and UGA will win a close one.  UGA 20 UL 17

GT and MSU could be high scoring.  I am going with GT 44 MSU 38.

Hope I'm right and both fan bases would be happy.

Why is everyone so down on the mid-tier bowls.  Outside of the first 8 or 9 bowls, there have been some pretty good match ups and games.  I agree that there are too many bowls, but Louisville vs UGA is not a bad game at all.  Go Jackets

Well, you're right about it being "everyone."

You seen those packed houses disguised as empty seats?

You have to watch closely because the cameramen are under strict orders to avoid showing the stands.

Ray Goff Anyone?
Ray Goff Anyone?

I have studied this game very closely and I think that if UGA can score more points than Louisville, UGA wins.  If not, it will  be Louisville.

When do the pitchers and catchers arrive in Florida for Spring Training?  After the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl is over, there is nothing else that can satisfy the imagination's desire for a meaningless college football exhibition.

I think if it was any other bowl, I'd of picked against UGA due to lack of who gives a s... But since they are playing against an old coach, and some old players, I think they'l be up for it.   Make no mistake, that's the key to the game.

I picked Tech too.   They beat us, and took FSU down to the wire.    Plus, I'm convinced the SEC west was way overhyped this year.

Dewnsav

@GTBob @Dewnsav I read it as you were frustrated with losing 11 of 12 and calling UGA a football factory...and tek was at a competitive disadvantage as all tek players were Rhode Scholar material and UGA players were academically challenged twits who couldn't cut it academically at tek...go dogs

@GTBob  Its easy to get distracted when you're spending more time shopping at Belk and eating Brazilian steaks than you do on the practice field.

That's Mark Richt Football.

GTBob
GTBob

@dawg fan I will give Mark Richt some credit if he keeps the team together for this one. After a disappointing season, capped off with a disappointing loss, they lost their OC and another coach and they are playing in a no name bowl in sub 40 degree weather. Not exactly the best of situations.

Dewnsav
Dewnsav

@GTBob @Dewnsav so now you know what UGA fans want tek fans to do ?? ya'll can be manipulated that easily ?? I think you give us too much credit...personally, I could care less about how "tek fans define their program", or your football team...if you would stay off any/all UGA stories you wouldn't swallow the bait many throw out...you and all your tek buddies constantly defecating on all things UGA doesn't buttress your case...go dogs

Jeff, perhaps you were hung over when you wrote this hyper-critical article. Not your best work. Toledo and AR State fans have feelings and should not be condemned to cleaning Arthur Blank's toilet. In spite of the name, the Belk Bowl should be a decent contest. His Holiness against the Prince of Darkness and his snarling gargoyle. Hopefully, His Holiness won't blow this one with a game killing brain freeze.

You are right about all except the Orange bowl - missy state beats the bungle bees.

No bowl game is a waste of time in this new system. The ACC has had a hard time getting traction against the hot winds of perception. Until now the system played the teams they could beat seldom forced to play any significant games. They controlled their publicity and could be royalty, in the eyes of the committee. It was great for the press following them, they had Christmas off, and so did Richt, no more. No one cares if you are up or down; if you lose to an ACC team they are better than you, period. The spin doesn’t work in this generation of having to show what you got.

Peachs

Blank owns this generation of sport’s writers, the public has no idea who half these guys are, the ones that don’t have public relation directors are loaded up on to balance the baloney spent on guys like Blank or Richt who write their own script. And then Blank cuts in on the little reality that is left in the press yesterday, to give the writer some cover like they are from opposite parties.

I think Oregon wins by 2+ touchdowns.  I think they knock of Bama too.  You kind of just get the feeling that its finally their time.  Florida State has been an overrated clown show all year.  I'm so sick of hearing about Jamies Winston.  I don't want to hear about him again until the predictable "where are they now?" piece 10 years from now after he's blown all his millions and is living in a van down by the river.

Ihateorange
Ihateorange

@dawg fan  That's if he gets millions - right now it seems that the NFL wants nothing to do with him.  That's why he said he was going back to FSU next year - if he left this year he might be lucky to get drafted at all, and if so it certainly would not be a high round pick.  He is toxic.

GTBob

@Dewnsav @dawg fan  They haven't played anyone nearly as good as the team(s) they are about to face in the playoffs.  They've been coasting all year.  It's going to catch up to them.  We see this time and time again this time of year in college football.  The teams that had to fight and claw to get there whip up on the teams that cakewalked their way in.

Watch and see.
