With Bobo gone, should Richt call plays again at Georgia?

Georgia offense coordinator Mike Bobo is making a career change: He has been given the head coaching opportunity he has long deserved and is moving on to Colorado State.

This could be a convenient time for Mark Richt to make a more subtle career change and start calling plays again.

Richt handed over play-calling duties to Bobo in 2007. The noise from the cheap seat notwithstanding, Bobo proved to be a successful play-caller. Georgia has had one of the most productive offenses in the nation and this season averaged an SEC-leading 41.7 points per game (eighth-highest in the nation).

With Bobo gone, Richt has three options: 1) Promote from within; 2) Hire from the outside; 3) Take the job back himself. There’s nothing wrong with the first or second options. Either can work. But I lean toward the third.

Nobody knows Georgia’s offensive personnel better than Richt, and, even with the expected loss of Todd Gurley to the NFL, the Bulldogs have the potential to have a very good team next season. While there’s no indication that Richt is in trouble following a 9-3 regular season (going into the Belk Bowl against Louisville), the sting from the embarrassing loss to Florida re-ignited criticism of the head coach from fans and media.

Records of 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the SEC generally isn’t something to complain about. But in a season when the SEC East was so bad, it’s less than fulfilling.

The Bulldogs also will have a far more difficult conference schedule in 2015. Alabama is back on the schedule, road games include Auburn and Tennessee, and Florida is expected to be improved with new coach Jim McElwain.

The key question: What maximizes Georgia’s chance for success? Is it Richt giving play-calling duties to somebody else or doing it himself, at least for a season? I say the latter. What say you?

Dawg Fans, carry your long johns if you're going to the Bleak Bowl in Charlotte, it looks to be cold but don't despair, Coach Richt says he will have you back in the warmth and palm trees of Tampa next Jan 1.

Oh, hello Belk Bowl.  What are you doing here?"

I understand that Petrino is calling the plays for Louisville, as are several outstanding SEC coaches.  What's wrong with Richt?  I think his staff have given up on him.  Why would Friend go from UGA to Colorado State?  Rats jump off a sinking ship...

Make Richt actually do some work other than counting all his money...

What we need is a new UGA.  Russ just didn't cut it this year.  He didn't seem to take his duties seriously; slept thru most games.

He don't do nothing else, anyway.  Give him a job, maybe he'll even open his mouth and talk every once in a while....show some emotion, act like he's actually the head guy; however, that might be too much to ask of Cool-Ray Marc.

Maybe the TE coach will get the TE's back in the offensive scheme again?

I would prefer someone with experience because of how long it took Mike Bobo to arrive. Year 2014 was his 1st  top 10 scoring offense and CMR never had a top 10 ranking. Their ranking since 2001..

Richt once again took the safe road by turning over play calling in Belk bowl to TEs coach. This protects him from potentially looking bad against his old DC. It amazes me that the UGA brass continues to support a man who doesn't get the most from his players or himself.

with another bad year on D, richt will tell pruitt to hit the road---he's been a bust so far.

BigGAdawg

Whether UGA adds an OC right away or not, I hope CMR will take over the play calling duties once again.  I think that will make a strong positive statement to incoming recruits (and fans alike) and give them the reassurance that the offense will be in good hands.

it doesn't matter really...we're talking about Georgia...where 5 stars become busts, choking is always expected, and, its always next season...

I vote for Brad Johnson, former NFL quarterback.  Oh but shoot, he's related to Richt by marriage and goody two shoes would consider this some type of misconduct,  But he's got my vote.

John Lilly!! Isn't there a nepotism law in Georgia?? Clearly CMR is giving this guy the shot at the OC job. Bobby Bowden set the example. Project a good moral religious image and you'll get Away with a lot from the press, the alumni and the fans. CMR has learned well. Never trust a man who wears his religion on his sleeve. Embarrassing.

maconexpress

@Houndedbyitall  Bobby Bowden might not have promoted CMR to oc  had he not won his 1st nc. CMR never won a nc when he promoted Mike Bobo to oc so I wouldn't call that following Bobby Bowden's example.

Macclenny_dawg

Well Lilly is going to call plays in the bowl. Should have known Richt just don't have any energy. Guess its just a audition for Lilly to get the job. Richt you can go back to sleep now. SMH!!!

If it could put Richt's head in the game hell yes call the plays.  They didn't have this hurry up offense back in his day, it will be interesting to see if he can get his pulse running fast enough to keep up.

It didn't appear that he had a pulse in the immediate aftermath of UGA's last-minute go-ahead TD vs GT.

If UGA fixes the defense, they won't need the top offense in the SEC.  So really I could care less.  Whoever steps in will do fine.  The question is, are they going to be put in a position to have to outscore teams like Bobo's offense had to do in many games?

Pruitt is the key to UGA's future, not the next OC.

Peachs

@MikeS777 the talent that comes through that offense, it almost takes more genius to mess it up than to win with it.

MikeS777
MikeS777

I actually do like Richt's play calling.  With the type of RBs and QBs he has now, it would be a more productive offense.  I liked Richt's use of the FB, especially in short yardage.  I also liked how he used the TE's down the middle of the field.  UGA used to kill people with those TE's.

Regardless, UGA had a much better defense when Richt called plays than they do now.  Say all you want about Bobo, Richt, or a new OC, this team is not going to have better seasons until the defense is fixed.  They aren't going to win the SEC until they can get back to the defensive form of 2002-2007.

Think about it.  If UGA can't win the SEC with an offense that was the most productive in the league over the past 3 years, then the defense needs to get a lot better.

ruffdawg

No!!!! But please do not hire Sanders from FSU nor the WR coach from Bama if that's the case you might as well hire in house.

patriotdog
patriotdog

I remember when the fans were clamoring for someone else to call plays because UGA was Field Goal U. The offense has not been the reason, with very few exceptions, that the team has underachieved consistently. Team records for pts per game have been set and broken more often than not with CMB calling the shots.

Richt had better put thought into a new O line coach if the rumors of Friend going with Bobo are true. That is where offensive success lies, the line.

MD Johns Creek
MD Johns Creek

I guess J Schultz did not watch any of the UGA games this year or he is making a Christmas joke.  Did you not notice that we made two of the stupidest calls in the history of UGA football at South Carolina on the first and goal from the four and with GT with the inane pooch kick that lost the game and a spot in a major bowl.  Richt was responsible for both by first not over-ruling Bobo on the former and going brain dead on the latter.  UGA has the ability and status to hire a well-heeled offensive mind with both college and professional experience.  They should spare no expense in increasing the coaching talent pool and hopefully avoid giving away wins in the future.  As for your point about... not a bad season, eliminate the three lay-down wins of the year and UGA had a very average season (at best) while having an extremely easy schedule by SEC standards.  CMR is a quality gentleman and an asset to the University, but, if UGA wants to go to the next level of competitiveness we need better coaching and decision making on the sidelines.  They can hire such.

Mike Dyer will not be able to play vs UGA.

Mark Richt needs to go!!!! How the hell can you keep a coach who not only pissed away one of the easiest SEC schedule seasons we could have dreamed of but also pissed away a BCS bowl game by losing to Georgia Tech??? WAKE UP UGA, this guy sucks!!!

Congrats to Bobo.

Good move.  Get out from under Richt.

He should do well.

Poledawg83

People forget that there were even more complaints about Richt as a play caller than there were about Bobo.  There were same complaints when he was at FSU.  Not saying they were warranted but it just shows how quickly we forget.  Nobody is perfect and you can and should say that the 1st and goal at USC was just plain dumb but overall Bobo was a good play caller and Richt will do well.

Whoever steps in needs to continue to develop quarterbacks and we know Richt can do that.

@Poledawg83 oooh but these yabos on this comment thread are all offensive experts and would NEVER call a wrong play, or have a correct play bit not executed properly.   I don't know why zI even bother reading the comments on ajc.... much less post/reply.

My god dude, shut your mouth. Ohio State is a waste of a bowl game every year especially if they line up against an SEC school... OSU would be a three or four loss team if they came out of the SEC. Enough with the Urban Meyer picture, I hope you are not over 16 years old because if you are, time to move out of mom's basement!!!

@candlin14 @OH_IO  the most overrated program in ncaa history is ohio state.  But don't worry, even a sub par bama team will drop kick the nuts back to ohio.  They don't deserve to be there anyway.

Yes CMR should call the plays and get more involved, in game once again. Then just let Coach Pruitt do his thing with the Defense.

Please just make sure you hire a new coach with awesome South Georgia recruiting skills.
