Fisher leaves Georgia off ballot, Bielema puts Tech 19th (huh?)

(Updated: 12:15 p.m.)

Think Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher must still be a little angry about defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt leaving Tallahassee for Georgia?

That’s the only plausible explanation for Fisher leaving Georgia off his final top-25 ballot in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

I’ve always found it amusing when some fans claim college football coaches can be more objective than sportswriters in polls. While the average college coach certainly can break down film better than the average writer, that doesn’t preclude them from bringing biases to the table when they vote.

The coaches’ poll is not a part of the new college football playoff system. Its final rankings differed from the official playoff poll with a top six of Alabama-Oregon-Florida State-Baylor-Ohio State-TCU. The Associated Press poll, voted by media members, had a top six of Alabama-Oregon-Florida State-Ohio State-Baylor-TCU, which mirrored the CFB poll.

Here are some noteworthy aspects of the USA Today poll:

• Fisher clearly has a thing about Georgia. He was the only coach to leave the Bulldogs off his top 25. His top six were FSU-Alabama-Oregon-Ohio State-Baylor TCU. He voted Georgia Tech ninth. Among the schools he ranked ahead of the unranked Bulldogs were his final six: Nebraska, Marshall, Northern Illinois, LSU, Boise State and Duke.

• Georgia coach Mark Richt was a little kinder to Fisher on his ballot, ranking the Seminoles third. His top six: Alabama-Oregon-FSU-Ohio State-Baylor-TCU. Richt voted Georgia Tech 11th and Georgia 12th.

• Tech’s Paul Johnson voted the Seminoles No. 1, which confirms what he had been saying all along — that FSU should be considered the best team until it loses. But Johnson had Ohio State out of the playoffs and TCU in at No. 4. His top six: FSU-Alabama-Oregon-TCU-Baylor-Ohio State. Johnson voted his Yellow Jackets ninth and Georgia 15th.

• Arkansas coach Bret Bielema put Georgia Tech only 19th on his ballot — six spots behind Clemson, whom the Jackets beat 28-6, and nine spots behind Georgia, whom the Jackets also defeated.

• Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson made friends at Baylor with having the Bears fourth, but he ranked Ole Miss 25th. (The Rebels finished No. 9 in the playoff and AP polls and No. 12 in the coaches’ poll).

• Baylor coach Art Briles put his own team at No. 3 and TCU at No. 5. He also was the only coach to vote Alabama No. 4.

• TCU coach Gary Patterson put his own team at No. 3 and Baylor at No. 5.

• Ohio State coach Urban Meyer voted Georgia (10th) ahead of Georgia Tech (13th). So do you like him a little more now, Dogs’ fans?

• Alabama coach Nick Saban had both Georgia Tech and Georgia in his top 10: Alabama-Oregon-FSU-Ohio State-Baylor-TCU-Michigan State-Mississippi State-Georgia Tech-Georgia.

(UPDATE) Wanted to add one more amusing ballot — that of Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy. He would have had two — TWO — schools from the Big 12 going to playoffs. His rankings: TCU-Alabama-Baylor-Florida State-Oregon-Ohio State. That’s right, Oregon out.

I don't really mind most of these, but I do feel that any coach that is more than double digits beyond the mean for a team in either direction should have his voting rights rescinded for the next season.  Penalize them for being hateful and not respecting the privilege they are given.

It is funny that all these coaches and writers having Ohio State at # 4, when if recent history is true Ohio State should have been 5th or 6th at best in IMHO. Baylor having beaten TCU head to head should have been 4th. I also believe as Coach Johnson from Tech said until Florida State loses they are # 1. My Top Ten would have been FSU, Alabama, Oregon, Baylor, Ohio State or TCU, Miss St. Michigan State, GT and Georgia. .

@CTBigDawg

"if recent history is true"?

What does that even mean? OSU had a better SOS and defeated more teams with winning records than did either Baylor or TCU. That's why OSU is #4.

He probably just forgot about them.

Who cares..

Jimbo Fisher's actions did not affect what happen with UGA one way or the other.

And while a lot of folks compared how UGA handled Gurley verses the multiple issues at FSU; UGA has commented one way or the other on the comparison.

If Fisher is angry that UGA's actions magnified how FSU is handling things, while he slowly ruins FSU's reputation - then that's his problem.

Again...

Who cares.

@Dawgfun

Jimbo Fisher doesn't care. Why should he? His team is competing for a National Championship.

UGA doesn't deserve ranking. Fisher regularly embarrasses himself publicly defending Jameis Winston. The guy could not be less credible.

Funny reading all these blogs and seeing how all these ignorant UGA fans took the bait on Fisher and ran with it.  Now they have to protect Georgia's program, and by extension Richt and Bobo.

Fisher is right.  Georgia does not deserve to be in the Top 25.  The other coaches put them in because of the immense talent among the players.  Richt is the lead weight pulling this program down to the bottom of the sewer...

Live with it Bulldog Nation.  You defend Richt while Marjoe is clearing out your bank vault and taking you to the cleaners.  He is actually laughing at how stupid you all are.

@SnoopDawg Thanks for keeping up with UGA. Fisher is a girl showing his emotions who cant handle anything certainly not that shady creep Winston. The company you keep.

@SnoopDawg Moron.  If we were talking about the Top 10 you'd be correct but everything negative you said about Richt and UGA could be said about pretty much 11-25.

This article is nothing less than a deflection of blame for Richt's imcompetence.  The AJC is in the tank for Richt...

UGA is just the piece of the FSU coaching staff that are in exile...  Bowdoin kept the best pieces as his legacy.  That is why they are winning championships and Richt is winning chumpionships...

Don't blame Fisher.  Blame Mark Wrecked.  His incompetence squanders Georgia's chances each and every year.  The Bulldog Nation is full of losers, too, that perpetuate such a disgraceful program that perennially recruits one of the most talented groups of high school ahtletes and promptly turns them into a team of undisciplined and untrained losers.

The Bulldog Nation, and the Board of Regents, are losers for tolerating such fraud.

UGA does not belong in the Top 25, for the simple reason that they cannot consistently play at that level consistently because of substandard coaching.  Period dot com.

Just win Georgia.  Stop whining and just win.  Wish CMR had a little bit of Jimbo in him.

Realistically I have no idea who Georgia is or where they belong in this. Playing in the east gives them a universe of weakness; Missouri losing so convincingly to Alabama didn’t help either, I am not convinced the SEC east is as good as teams in the ACC. They are already begging off the Louisville game like it is an insult, to have to play so beneath them, impossible to get up for it. They need to be about showing something to the world and stop living off of freebies thrown at them from the Barnharts of the world. I think there is a great argument for them not being in the top 20 and the game in Charlotte will either be proof in the pudding or they will grow up and play like they belong in the elite they claim to be.

jimbo is tired of other teams stealing his top coaches and paying them a lot more money!  fsu needs to get some fatcat boosters to kick in some millions so they can pay their coaches top dollar

"Think Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher must still be a little angry about defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt leaving Tallahassee for Georgia?"

I doubt it. It's more likely a jab at the homer "sports journalism" that took place here at the AJC as they tried to fade the heat of two simultaneous NCAA major rules violations being investigated at the University of Georgia during the 2014 football season. Pruitt was on the verge of being fired from FSU for his "extracurricular activity" anyway.

@PigIron this is the kind of stuff that almost put FSU undefeated out of the final four.  You got FSU defending National Champions, and still have not lost a game, and serious people trying to trump that with hot air.  What I want to know is how the hell Ohio State gets in these things.  They will get their ears handed to them by Alabama and next year be crying again that they have the team to play with the big boys.

PigIron

@ARdawg

I did.

Why do you think JP left his job with the National Champions after only one year?

PigIron

@Peachs

" What I want to know is how the hell Ohio State gets in these things."

It's really very simple. They do it by winning most of their games every year.

2012 - 12-0

2013 - 12-2

2014 - 11-1

@DawgNole

You're right. Thanks.

Ohio State played some very impressive football to end their season. They obviously deserved to be in the playoff. I don't understand folks who want to see Cinderella teams ranked above better teams simply because those better teams have a history of being good. If you just want new faces in the playoff every year, then seed the teams by lottery without even considering their performance on the field of play.

Multiple times this year I was in my seats listening to a Bobo and Richt sympathizer. I understand, we could be a lot worse, but tell me how much better we are today than we were 10-15, even 20 years ago. That's what I thought!

Who cares.  Another 9-3 season, just like many others, with losses to two of the worst teams on the schedule.    Could care less which coach voted for whom.  A thousand bucks for a donation to Hartman and 80/game for two tickets for 25 years.  No more.  I bought my 50 inch HD and I'll watch from home 20 minutes from Sanford Stadium.

Amazing Fisher takes over after 4 yrs, NAT, 2 undefeated seasons.  Mark R.  14 years and no NAT, yet UGA hates on him liked they hated  on Fla coaches, typical loser football at UGA.

Jimbo's  behavior and protection of his players is admirable but in the big picture he has looked desperate and appears to have sold his soul to the devil to get another National Championship.

PigIron

@DawghaveMange

Isn't that how ALL National Champions are viewed in the great state of Georgia?

I was under the impression that it is only Coach Richt's refusal to sell his soul to the devil that has prevented UGA from winning a National Championship.

Who really cares how Jimbo ranked UGA and why does a blog need to be written about it?  I guess there's nothing worthy of writing about UGA at the moment?

Remember the 1993 movie "The Program" about a fictional ESU Timberwolves team that decided to do whatever they had to to win at all costs? There was no doubt that that was the FSU Criminoles. They've had a sleazy program for decades. Fisher is just the latest coach who's sold his soul to win big. Any ethical coach would have sent Jameis Winston packing a long time ago.

I wonder if the UGA fans who trash FSU's ethics remember where their head coach and defensive coordinator came from.

@GTBob  Let's see - CMR coached for Bobby Bowden and not Jimbo (although Bobby had his issues as well.)

CJP was at FSU one year then bolted to UGA; specifically saying "he wanted to work for CMR." In hindsight it's obvious that CJP didn't want to be part of the penal colony that is FSU.

@Reaganite @GTBob Reaganite... you have yet to post anything of worth yourself..  Doesn't do any good to throw stones when you are in a glass house..

With that said...  The NCAA will react to everything 10 years down the road.  Just like that are just now doing something about things that UNC did in the late 90's...  If you haven't noticed, the NCAA turns a blind eye to programs that make them money.  In FSU's case..  We aren't talking about some academic fraud or recruiting violations.  We are talking about rape, assault, theft and obstruction of justice.  These are (to me) far more serious crimes that cheating on a test or getting cars for playing for a school.  Shame on FSU, the NCAA, the coaches and the city of Tallahassee if these things are found to be true.

I find it ironic how boosters, alumni and people tied to the university are the ones that did the "investigation".  I wised that the state attorney or federal prosecutor would had stepped in.  I feel sorry for all those victims.

While... I think sometimes you have be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  and yes... maybe even make mistakes..  But, come one... history is history.  If a person has a history of issues....chances are those issues are true.

If Jameis Winston doesn't get in trouble when the team goes to the Worst Coast it will be a miracle!!

FSU "Lucky to be in the playoffs" complaining about where they have to play. Another stroke of genius by Fisher. Obviously he's expecting the same type of preferential treatment that he gives Winston.

Winston is the poster boy for "My Way...The wrong Way".

Building character and credibility is a long and enduring process. A lifetime to build it and one bad comment, mistake, or poor judgement to destroy it. Jimbo Fisher is running a tab on bad comments, mistakes and poor judgement.

Winston is the "Brat Child" that gets away with anything and everything.

FSU has become a haven for players of poor character. The University seems to embrace that type of individual.
