Updated: 11:40 a.m.

Georgia Tech has finally extended an offer to coach Paul Johnson for a contract extension, after an absence of negotiations for several months.

“We’re exchanging numbers now and we’re actually in discussion for an extension,” Jack Reale, Johnson’s agent, said Monday after receiving the extension offer. “I don’t want to characterize anything further than that.”

Johnson has led the Jackets to a 10-2 record this season, including Saturday’s 30-24 upset of Georgia. Tech won the ACC Coastal Division title and will face No. 3 ranked Florida State for the conference championship. The Jackets have a chance to play in a major bowl game and even retain longshot hopes of being in the college football playoffs (although they would need some other dominoes to fall).

But Johnson has only two years remaining on his contract after this season, which is an unusual situation for college coaches given potential recruiting ramifications. Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski has been hesitant until now to extend the deal, and when asked before this season about putting Johnson in a difficult position in recruiting, he responded: “(It’s) the most overblown thing in the world. That’s a figment of agents’ and other people’s imagination. (Opposing) coaches will say what they’re going to say. But the counter to that is coaches will just pick up and leave.”

So here’s the thing about Paul Johnson: He never has been the type to just pick up and leave. The man has an ego but he never has been one to look for the next great job. He is prickly and thin-skinned and isn’t shy about going on the offensive against critics, particularly in the media. But he never has hid the fact that he likes coaching at Georgia Tech.

What Johnson doesn’t like is being treated like a lame-duck, which is close to what Bobinski had been doing. Bobinski didn’t hire Johnson, Dan Radakovich did. He made it clear before the season that he was still evaluating Johnson and was going to take his time before deciding on a contract extension.

Johnson went 20-7 with an ACC title (later stripped by the NCAA) in his first two seasons, which probably wasn’t a realistic standard to expect. But the drop off in the next four years (28-25) gave Bobinski pause. Worth noting: Tech was a respectable, even if not great, 19-13 in the ACC in those four seasons, but going 1-7 to Georgia and in that span brought down the overall record.

Bobinski was approached about an extension by Reale periodically but had never made an actual proposal until Monday. The timing is understandable. Johnson and his assistants will resume recruiting next week after the ACC championship game and it’s going to be difficult to sway recruits with two years on his deal (Bobinski’s previous comments notwithstanding).

All my Georgia Tech insiders were telling me they were secretly hoping Tech would have a bad season because they do not want CPJ around any more. Now Tech will be stuck with him.

Extension is in order.  Beef up the recruiting staff substantially.  Pay the staff more.  Give some of CPJ's raise to the just mentioned.   Pay Johnson top dollar for ACC if the program shows that it is sustainable, which all signs point to the fact that it is.  Young players look poised to contribute.  Player development looks much better than in the past.

I'm not a billionaire so I can't help there, but I buy club level season tickets for my family.  Hope that is enough!

Bobinski is proving himself to be tough negotiator. Now is the time to extend Johnson if you are ever going to do it.

Johnson's key difficulties have been:

1.  Vad Lee did not fit the system.   Justin Thomas solved this.

2.  Poor defense. Ted Roof solved this

Who is that guy holding PJ's right arm? Is the the special assistant to the Johnson extension?

Great Coach, Tech's a hard proposition sitting in the middle of the SEC and a high level acedemic school.  Johnson knows his game but can't recruit with the money that is passed around to SEC recruits so he has to go outside of the regions with a limited recruting budget, Tech is really a small school compared to Georgia, Alabama and the other SEC Universities.  Hey give the guy a great raise and hope he can continue to get more from less.

For the last several years I have followed GT's football recruiting. It has been disappointing. It seems like we are always "stuck" with no 5-star, an occasional 4-star, a few 3-star, and a string of 2-star recruits. If coaching is about getting the best from what you have then I say Paul Johnson has done the best job of coaching I have seen at Georgia Tech since Bobby Dodd!!!!! And Dodd got the recruits!!! Go Jackets!!!!

@gtcaryd @Swarm78  I wouldn't say always. Tech has been terminally mediocre with the exception of this year....mediocre with HIS players.

Both
Ga. Southern and Tech had better records this year than UGA . That's saying a lot.

He has been the head coach at Tech for 7 years and has now won twice against UGA.  I was not a math genius but I believe he could not have lost seven times to them.

I've read three sources tonight, including the local paper from Nebraska.  Paul Johnson isn't even mentioned as a possible replacement.  Mark Richt btw was!

We heard the same bait and trash talk from UGA fans the last time we won in 2008.

I haven't read all the comments but the article states 1-7 vs UGA under Johnson.  Now 2-5.  Where does 1-7 come from??

LOL at RuPaul trolling after we beat uga.  My how the narrative shifts when you keep getting proven wrong...

Birmingham__Jacket

Well, I was proven wrong too.  I've never seen a Georgia Tech team improve as much as it has during the course of a season--- particularly our defense.

That's coaching!

Wow there are a lot of new folks on here and most are retarded. People calling for a more run pass qb, uga being a trap game' cpj going to nebraska, we need more balance etc. Fools. We either score or turn it over. With a defense and a qb that buys in, we can win every game we play.  I love these idiots who love the spread option (not the flexbone) out of the shotgun. Every team in america runs the same offense.  Thee fact that we are different makes us better. JT for 2 more years, just like Eric crouch in the 90s. Go jackets!!!

420 bulldwag

you heard it here first.  look for big red (nebraska) to approach paul johnson about coaching nebraska. i wouldnt find it surprising if they asked both ted and paul about coaching there.

paul is attractive because his offense is similar to the o that nebraska ran in their heyday with tom obsborne and bob delvaney.

ted roof has left a successful d at both bit ten schools he coached at.  penn state and minnesota.  he is familar with the big 10.  he was the orchestrator of au defense against oregon that won a mnc and he was key in tech's recent winning streak including the uga win.

both coaches get alot ouf of what talent they do have. imagine what they could do at nebraska? money wise... any buy out clause that gt puts on his new contract can be easily bought out by a rich program like nebraska!

jimbob22

@420 bulldwag seems like I read that Pelini wasn't quite the polished tail-kisser that they like at Nebraska, so I'm not so sure I could visualize them going after PJ, or PJ wanting to coach there.

Quackmeyer
Quackmeyer

@420 bulldwag  I heard it from you first but I just don't believe it.  My guess is that CPJ will retire as the GT coach. He has been at this game a long time and he has the fire about him at GT that may not follow him to another school because of his age. When you get older and your bank acct. is full, moving to a new challenge is not all that high on your bucket list.

One win over UGA in six years does not make CPJ priceless. They won based on an accidental and unexplainable field goal.  Still no excuse for losinng last year's game to UGA. There was no defense.

someonesdad
someonesdad

@lvg Accidental and unexplainable?  He meant to kick it, so it's not accidental.  It's explained by simple physics.  Do you believe aliens intervened?

Quackmeyer
Quackmeyer

@someonesdad @lvg  How can a field goal be accidental?  Was he suppose to punt it?  Now if he did punt it, that would be unexplainable, don't you think.

FalconUGAFan
FalconUGAFan

@lvg  I think his point is that it was based on mistakes by UGA and Richt. But matters not. GT won the game and they earned it. End of story.

SupersizeThatOrder-mutt

@lvg

The only reason we even had to go for a field goal was because of your lousy SEC refs not knowing when to blow a play dead based on forward progress (not to mention that Justin crossed the goal line), and not knowing a fumble from an obviously incomplete pass.  You're not too bright, are you?

I woulda waited till AFTER next year....who was comin after him?

I have been down on fish-fry for 4 years. I would waited. Lets see what happens after next season's BRAuuutal schedule. Just my opinion.

OldJacketFan

@Iluvnutella

Question for you, what make the '15 schedule so BRAuuutal? free shoes w/o jameis, nd w/o golson(7-5)? Tech will be a deeper overall team in '15 and with an experienced O and D line, add in JeT with a full year under his belt. Why do you fear the '15 schedule so much?
Aside from your dislike for CPJ?

Nah - they are going to welcome native son CMR home with open arms.

BTW - EPL is now a 1 and 1/2 team race.

GTBob

@BigCrimson75 History maybe, but I don't think CPJ is going to care about the money much. If he gets an extension then he will probably be around 3 mil a year here. Nebraska wouldn't pay him much more than that. When it comes down to money vs warm weather and great golf with his rich golfing buddies, I just cant see him leaving.
