Georgia loses SEC East, will it show against Georgia Tech?

Georgia’s SEC East title hopes ended Friday and any long-shot hopes of making the college football playoffs evaporated with it.

The question now: Will it take any steam out of the Bulldogs going into their regular-season finale against rival Georgia Tech?

Needing help in the form of a Missouri collapse down the stretch to win the SEC East, the Dogs didn’t get it. The Tigers won their sixth straight game — after an embarrassing 34-0 loss to Georgia in Missouri back in October — rallying from a 14-3 deficit Friday to beat Arkansas 21-14. As a result, the Tigers (7-1) edge the Bulldogs (6-2) to win the East and will face Alabama or Mississippi State in next week’s SEC championship.

UPDATE: Here’s a link to the full column on this subject.

The Tigers are probably the SEC’s weakest division champions in history, having lost to 3-8 Indiana, as well as the lopsided defeat to Georgia. But Missouri managed to defeat two opponents that the Dogs should have but couldn’t: South Carolina and Florida.

And file this under things you thought you would never hear: Missouri, back-to-back SEC East champions.

Will it affect Georgia’s play Saturday against Tech? We’ll find out. The Jackets clinched a berth in the ACC championship last week and are squarely focused on Georgia. The Dogs should be focused on Tech but this ending has to be deflating, given they still held out slim hopes of making the college football playoffs if it won consecutive games over the Jackets and No. 1 ranked Alabama (should the Tide win the SEC West). Now, they’ll have a long break until their bowl game.

We have the chance of finishing regular season 10-2; think we'll see both offenses show up today; we'll need our "D" with an Auburn-esque / Clemson 2nd half effort. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

If Dawgs win today, they are projected to play in the Orange Bowl.

i must say i am sickened that a lesser team will be representing the $ec east but i think we still have a outside chance of making the playoff if a few different things happen i wish we were playing a better team then tech so we could show the comittee that we deserve to be in the playoff i do know one thing next season aint no way missouri wins anything with our loaded team.

Dawgs should have played Ohio States schedule.  No victories over ranked opponents.  Comical.

Navy, Kent State, Cincinatti, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State, Illinois.  And clownlike fools get on national TV and rank them #6.  What a corrupt system.

@POAD2014  What a fitting uniform for America's favorite ''chain gang team".....LOL!

Who would you rather have Coaching  your team?  The Mizzou Coach or the UGA Coach, one gets the most out of nothing. The other get the least out of the most, 4-5 stars.

HuckFinn1835

@58Supersports  Depends on the results you're looking for; if you your aim is to get to an obscure, irrelevant bowl game, Coach Richt would be he best coach to get you there.

This season encapsulates how pathetic UGA football really is. We had the easiest road to an undefeated season we ever could of asked for and we completely choked. The problem with this is the fact that we still have supporters of Mark Richt and its fans like you who kill this program. This is Georgia and since we are so use to mediocrity with all Atlanta sports I guess its ok here. What a pathetic and pitiful season coached by an awful choke artist head coach. Keep asking for Mark Richt to return UGA since everyone is so comfortable in the outback bowl every year!!!

The Dawgs ain't playing for the SEC Championship next week because of CMR.  If Mizzou had folded down  the stretch then the Dawgs would be playing but without their best player  - also because of CMR.

This team is good enough to play for the National Championship.  Doesn't mean they'ed win it.  Doesn't mean they'ed even get there - there's that pesky, SEC West opponent to consider.

But they are good enough - if they had Todd Gurley and had earned the opportunity.  After eleven games, they have neither.

Who do you blame?

That's a good question.  How they play against GT today will show the kind of character they have.  They are very capable of wiping the floor with the bugs, but they took themselves out of the SEC Championship with two inexcusable losses.  So, who knows what team will show up in Athens today?

The Irrelevance Bowl will have several representatives at today's game.

No kidding. What a stupid title. Mizzou won the division they didn't need help. I am glad Ugag lost. They do have the worst fan base in college football. They are Alabama trash talkers but with a Clemson trophy case.

heads up jacket fans going to athens.  you are in hostile territory.

they will trash your car win or lose. they will curse at you. spit on you. woof at you.  they might even try to assault from behind given the chance.  i had one dwag whom i had never met grab me by the shirt collar because i said i cheered for fla in jax.   i had all those things happen to me the last time and ONLY TIME i have been in athens.

i have been to dozens of different stadiums to watch college fb and the stadium 'fondly' referred to as the "urinal between the hedges" stands out in my mind as being the worst.       see above.

and dwags wonder why they are the most HATED fan base in college fb.  dont believe me?  ask boise fans what they think of the dwags!

thanks dwags for a game day i will never forget.  poad.

go jackets.... to hell with the dwags

@420 bulldwag Poor POAD, some UGA fan was a big meanie to him back in 1975, and he's been stewing over it ever since, rotting away on his daddy's farm in whatever white-trash exurb he calls home, and convincing himself he's better than every UGA fan/grad, despite accomplishing absolutely nothing in his pitiful life.   Complete waste of oxygen.

Missouri deserves the SEC East title. They took care of business. We played them on one of Mauk's worst days ( 5 turnovers by Mizzou I think) and won. The Dawgs still have plenty to play for against Tech. Finishing 10-2 will look a lot better to bowl committees than 9-3. I hope the team keeps their focus. GO DAWGS !!

Georgia loses SEC  East ?????  ......More like Missouri  earns SEC EAST championship for the second year in a row !!!!!!!!

TomDawg
TomDawg

Why are people saying Missouri beat a very good defense....are you forgetting Georgia put up 45 against that very same defense, on the road no less. Georgia may not have won the east and yes they should have beaten S.C. and Florida, but they are still a very good team and would beat some of those teams ranked higher than them. Georgia Tech has had a good season, but they will not beat Georgia in Athens today. They will beat FSU next week though. And by the way.....I still fail to see how the refs could say Mauk's arm was coming forward to attempt a pass when Flower's nailed him, lol, that call was laughable, he flinched because he felt the pressure, there was absolutely no move made that showed his intent was to pass. So you folks jump on the UGA hating bandwagon all you want, but it's better to be a DAWG than an insect or a hairless nut any day.

Nowayjose9

@TomDawg Well they did shut out lsu and miss. It's folly to look back when you played a team in october and think it's the same team a month later. Things change. Injuries happen. Teams get confident. Missouri earned it. They didn't lose to sc and fla.

so Schultz misses on another forecast, what's new about that, he likes going to Tampa or Orlando on Jan 1 to cover the Dogs.

UGA = Mediocrity + Irrelevance. At most, UGA could beat only one team in the SEC West. They couldn't even beat two of the worst teams in the SEC East this year.

So much for the Kool-Aid-fueled delusions of grandeur.

well, they're not playing for anything anymore so it's not like winning or losing matters much at this point. Win and they go to Generic Bowl A, lose and they go to Generic Bowl B ...

Watching College Game Day, the Georgia-Georgia Tech game, pitting two teams ranked in the top 16 in the country, has been relegated to just a small, overlooked footnote in the nation's eyes.  Don't blame Missouri; they earned their way into the championship, unlike the Dawgs.  Watching now, Tennessee and Kentucky are bigger stories trying to qualify for bowls!  In this state, though, it still matters.  Dawgs! Don't let down!  Pound the Techies!
