Georgia vs. Georgia Tech: Which team has had better season?

If there is one absolute about this week’s Georgia-Georgia Tech game, it’s that the Bulldogs are perceived as a better teams. Georgia is a 12½-point favorite on the Glantz-Culver line. The Dogs rank higher in both the college football playoff poll (Georgia 10th, Georgia Tech 18th)  and the AP poll (Georgia eighth, Georgia Tech 16th).

But a case could be made that Georgia Tech has had the better season, certainly against the backdrop of expectations.

Breaking it down:

• Records: Both teams are 9-2 overall and 6-2 in their respective conferences. They have only one common opponent: Clemson (both won). The Jackets already have clinched the ACC Coastal and a spot in the conference championship game against Florida State. The Bulldogs need Missouri to lose its final game at home against Arkansas to win the SEC East and play in the Georgia Dome in two weeks (against Alabama or Mississippi State).

• Preseason predictions: Most picked South Carolina to win the SEC East. Most expected Georgia to finish second but some projected them as East champions (present company included). Conversely, Georgia Tech wasn’t expected to finish anywhere near the top of the ACC Coastal. The ACC preseason media poll had the Jackets placing fourth behind Miami, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. (I had Tech finishing 8-4, 5-3 in the ACC).

• Big wins: Georgia opened the season impressively with a 45-21 win over then No. 16 Clemson, won 34-0 at No. 23 Missouri in the first game without then suspended running back Todd Gurley and two weeks ago slammed No. 9 Auburn 34-7. Georgia Tech, after looking wobbly in early non-conference play, opened ACC play with a big 27-24 win at Virginia Tech and followed that up with an even bigger 28-17 win over Miami. Their last game was their best performance of the year: a 28-6 win over No. 19 Clemson.

• One bad loss: The Dogs lost a winnable game at South Carolina 38-35. Tech had raised expectations with the wins over Virginia Tech and Miami but then lost at home to an underdog Duke team, falling behind 31-12 and losing 31-25.

• One really bad loss: Georgia went to Jacksonville to face Florida, which had lost three out of four, and appeared on the verge of firing coach Will Muschamp, only to allow 418 yards rushing and lose to the Gators 38-20. Tech followed its loss to Duke by going to North Carolina, which was reeling with a four-game losing streak and off-field issues, and lost a score-fest to the Tar Heels 48-43.

• Big picture: The Jackets will play for a conference championship and any question about Paul Johnson’s job security under a relatively new athletic director (Mike Bobinski) should have dissipated. Consecutive upsets over No. 10 Georgia and No. 3 Florida State probably wouldn’t be enough to elevate the Jackets into a playoff berth but their fans would be euphoric. The Bulldogs need help to get to the SEC title game. If they get there, play Alabama and win but miss the playoffs, most fans will be happy but still be upset about the Florida game.

It’s close. But given expectations, Tech has had the better season. Agree or disagree? The cyber-floor is yours.

The records are the same, but, the expectations of the fans are not.The Tech fans expected a lousy year and they are very happy with 9 wins. They are still excited about the Clemson win and have forgotten about the pathetic UNC showing when they gave up 50+ points and didn't tackle anyone or get within 10 yards of a receiver.

The UGA fans think the program is on par with Bama and they expect to win EVERY game. They are not too thrilled with their season.Seriously, how can you blow out Auburn and get blown out by Florida and lose to the old ball coach. This UGA team should be undefeated.

Ramblin_Rick
Ramblin_Rick

@gknight The truth is both teams here should be undefeated and then this game would be huge and have Championship Implications!   But the reality is Alabama and Mississippi State are both better than these paid to play Dawgs.  Losing a shootout with UNC is far better than being blown out by the Gators.  Go Jackets!!

It's true: Uga gets all the redneck fans in every trailer park across the state; they buy Pabst Blue Ribbon brew with their welfare checks to go with their barbeque goat while wearing their cheap red and black Bulldawg jerseys from Walmart. This is why it remains mediocre and irrelevant.

Thomas Brown, for someone that thinks his team has had a better season, you sure have typed a lot.  ....almost as if you don't believe it yourself.  I'm glad you feel the way you do. Anyone that is as insecure as you appear to be has to be a fan of the Dawgs.  Are you guys proud to show how ignorant you are when it comes to basic spelling?

Well, let me see.  Georgie tek lost to UNRANKED North Carolina and UNRANKED Duke.  Georgia beat Auburn # 15 in the polls, ahead of Georgie tek.  Georgia lost to UNRANKED Florida and UNRANKED South Carolina, both 6-win teams in The SEC.  Georgie tek beat Clemson.  Oh, Georgia beat Clemson as well.

Who had the better season is quite obvious, as are the # 9 Scout.com Recruiting Rankings compared to Paul Johnson's # 52 because on Defense, no one wants to practice against that high school offense EVERY DAY FOR 5 YEARS, and on offense no receivers want to come there either.

Georgie tek does not have a football program.

Georgia does.

Georgie tek is on NCAA PROBATION IN FOOTBALL.

SuckSpin1835 needs to put down the pipe. Now.  I am glad he made those predictions though.  He is always wrong so I'll take those predictions.

Tech has not had a better season but they have exceeded expectations.  Of course that is easy to do when the expectations were very low to begin with.  No way can you say Tech has had a better season if they lose to Georgia yet again.  To gain that title they have to win Saturday.

HuckFinn1835

Every trailer park in Georgia will be holding a commiseration party after Tech whips those curs on Saturday. They'll serve barbeque goat and Pabst Blue Ribbon brew.....the crying will last all year.

I like this series when both teams are ranked.  Actually happy to see tech play up to their potential.  It would be nice if we also stepped up our results a little as well...

Either way, I would rather beat tech when they have hope

Happy Tuesday Ladies err techies,

The current count is 5-IN-A-ROW.  4 more wake-ups and it'll be 6-IN-A-ROW.

UGA 45 GT 10.

Reaganite

@gatechclassof95  UGA is currently a 12-14 point favorite.  When UGA's defense shows up they blow the spread away, by a huge margin.  UF got the early Christmas gift, GT will get UGA's best effort.

Just review the AU, Ark, Mizzou, Clemson and UK games. Even the SC game was 38 points scored by UGA after missing 2 field goals, having a TD called back and losing the time-of-possession battle.  UGA defense is 100% improved over the units that played Clemson and SC early in the season.

UGA will manhandle GT's D2 offense.  GT's running attack less than AU or Ark.  Couple the overrated rushing game with the mediocre passing game (at best) and the UGA offense will be getting a lot of touches.

GT has not faced an offense even remotely as good as UGA's.  GT will be one of the softest defenses UGA has faced.  The GT defense slightly better than Troy or Charleston Southern, on par with Vandy or UK.

GT's only hope is injuries, several injuries to key UGA players

I was being generous by saying GT will score 10.

6-IN-A-ROW coming soon techie.

DIT:  I agree.   Clemson -South Carolina is also at noon but Tech-UGA should be at 3:00.

Looks like the dwags aren't the draw they used to be.  They are holding Tech back in the

scheduling process.

GTBob
GTBob

@wreckmaniac If you put GT/UGA at 3:30 then it is up against FSU/UF, ND/USC, and the Egg Bowl. Hardly anyone would watch it.

Buschleaguer
Buschleaguer

@wreckmaniac

Too bad UGA is home team, If Tech was at home Jefferson - Pilot could broadcast the game on all of their UHF affiliates and the start time could be at 12:30 pm.But why not throw SEC Network a bone  after last week's schedule of Cupcake Classics. The Tech /UGA game is thier best match up since season opener with Carolina /Texas A&M game. Just hope this match up turns out to be a more competitive game.

Reaganite
Reaganite

@wreckmaniac  It's more like the Jackets are holding Ga Southern back.  I wish UGA would drop the annual GT game.

Playing GT is inconsequential to UGA.  Sure GT will win one every 5-6-7 years but the UGA/GT game has no bearing on UGA's SEC standing. GT is having a decent season but most years GT is not even a factor in their own ACC conference.

UGA vs GT generates nothing more than intrastate interest.  Compare to UGA vs UF, UGA vs AU or even UGA vs Clemson - these are regional games that generate national interest.  Most seasons these games impact rankings and/or conference standing.

If UGA could adopt another rival for Rival Weekend then UGA would get a marque time slot.  Example - UGA vs LSU, UGA vs Texas A&M or a game with another conference heavy weight.

Playing GT every season hurts UGA.

GTBob
GTBob

@Reaganite It's rare, but im finally going to agree with you on something. The UGA/GT game in general is bad for both programs and if any logic were applied then the series would end.

gatechclassof95
gatechclassof95

@GTBob @Reaganite

It's a little known fact that relates somewhere back to one of the world wars, but I think it's actually a state law that UGA and Tech have to play.

GTBob
GTBob

@gatechclassof95 Ive heard that before but im pretty sure it's an old wives tale. Either way, it would be a completely unenforcable law. The most that could be done is to apply political pressure to keep the series going which would look pretty stupid from a PR perspective. If GT and UGA both wanted to end the series then they could end it. It will most likely happen in the next 20 years.

Buschleaguer
Buschleaguer

@GTBob @gatechclassof95

I think the only way the series would be pressured in to ending would be if the SEC went to a 9 game conference Schedule. Then the cover to  drop Tech for a cupcake could be rationalized by adding another conference game. But as fan I would like to see the rivalry continue in perpetuity. If anything in another 10 years or so add Ga.Southern in the mix.

Reaganite
Reaganite

@gatechclassof95 and you commented that I don't much about football????????  Dude that is about the most lame-brain thing/babble that I have ever heard.

GTRay
GTRay

@GTBob @gatechclassof95

It's not in Georgia Code.  IF it were, it would be legally enforceable.  However, it's not, so it's a moot point.  It may be that at some point the legislature passed a resolution to that effect, but that would not have the force of law.

WDE
WDE

@GTBob @Reaganite  when the President of Ga Tech walks barefoot into the Capitol building while the state legislature is in session and gets on his knees and begs to end the UGA/Bug U series I will be OK with ending the series until then ..Game ON !

DawginCO
DawginCO

@wreckmaniac LOL.  It has more to do with the lack of respect for Tech fool.  LMAO!

Here is why it's that way:  UF vs FSU and Bama vs Auburn have the ESPN top spots.  In case your feeble mind can't understand why that would be, here it is.  #1 Bama.  #3 FSU.   No way anybody else gets those spots.  Meanwhile  CBS has #4 Miss St vs Ole Miss in their 3:30 slot.

So you can stuff you BS where the sun doesn't shine.  Your supposedly superior Tech intelligence has been proven to be nothing more than a figmnet of your imagination.  LMAO!

Ramblin_Rick
Ramblin_Rick

@Reaganite @wreckmaniac Maybe you can find another Troy or Charleston Southern... Is there a Charleston Northern?    LMAO     Georgia Southern would whip you like the Gators did!  You might wet your cage.   THWG!

Go Jackets!!

Still, with the exception of the iron Bowl, this game is the only other game in the Southeast with two ranked teams and it starts at noon. This should be either the 3;30 or 7pm game. Give Clemson/SC the noon start or UK /Louisville noon. I hate noon starts.

GTBob

@DIT Clemson/SC and UK/Louisville also start at noon.

I agree with Tech having the better year. UGA is at where they expected. Losing to Florida ruined the above expectations that teams shoot for. Tech has been impressive in the 2nd half of the year. Good to see this game with two good teams gong at it Saturday. Should be a great game.
