On Gurley, Chubb and the Georgia defense

Something you never want to see: an athlete down with a trainer checking his knee. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Something you never want to see: an athlete down with a trainer checking his knee. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Here are my three “Short Takes” on the Georgia-Auburn game.

Here’s a link to the full game column.

1. The steam goes out: I can’t remember the last time I was in a locker room after such a big win by a team but with a low-key celebration. There was uncertainty about Todd Gurley’s future — with thoughts and emotions perhaps leaning toward the worst-case scenario, which is that he suffered a major knee injury and his career as a Bulldog is over. An injury is an awful way for any athlete’s college career to come to an end, let alone one as great as Gurley. A potential Heisman Trophy season was derailed by the four-game NCAA suspension for selling autographs over two years, and now comes this. If Gurley has had one problem in Athens, it’s his inability to stay healthy. Hopefully this is one injury he can come back from.

2. Chubb, The (Other) Man: If not for Gurley’s suspension, Georgia coach Mark Richt might have never realized what No. 2 tailback Nick Chubb was capable of in a starting role. Chubb rushed for 671 yards and five touchdowns in four games when Gurley was out. The freshman took over the game against Auburn when Gurley had to exit after he appeared to injure his elbow in the second quarter. He had four carries for 51 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown to give the Dogs their first lead at 14-7. Richt initially sent in the field goal unit on fourth-and-1 from the Auburn 9 but then called time out, changed his mind, sent the offense back onto field and called Chubb’s number. That says something about the confidence Richt has in him. The freshman took the handoff and blasted through the right side for the TD. He went over 100 yards midway through the third quarter and finished with 144 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 carries.

3. Jeremy Pruitt’s job: Florida rushing for more than 400 yards seems even less logical today than it did two weeks ago. But that game notwithstanding, Georgia’s defensive coordinator has done a remarkable job with this team. Auburn, which has had one of the nation’s most productive offenses under coach Gus Malzahn, was held to seven points, its lowest output in two years with Malzahn and quarterback Nick Marshall (who was limited to 41 yards rushing and 11-of-23 passing with an interception). If there’s a reason to remain confident in Georgia despite Gurley’s injury, the defense is it. If the Dogs can do that to Auburn, they can do it to anybody.

wreck...obsessed ??...don't let your mouth write a check your stinger can't cash...love it when people run their mouth about what their team is gonna do, ref: "T Roof who will show the dwags something in two weeks"...maybe they will, but will you come back in tow weeks and one day and admit you were wrong if "T Roof" doesn't ?? go dogs

Lose to South Carolina and Florida and go to the final 4 ?  Pass the Koolaid.

Dweebs:  Tech CAN'T use a defensive coordinator.  We have T Roof who will show the dwags something in two weeks.

Count on it.  Muschamp needs to apply elsewhere.  Let him go wherever  SEC nepotism leads him.  That club takes care of their own.

wreckmaniac

Too bad that one game does not a season make.  But dwag fans, with a win over Tech of course, will be ready to resign CMR to another 10 years. Nations top recruits, always beats Tech , but never wins the big one.

wreckmaniac
wreckmaniac

Coaches come and they go.  Except CMR at UGA. Has survived 5 governorships at Georgia and delivered not one nat champ.   When he retires from UGA, which will never happen, he needs to go into politics.

Possibly. But if anyone ( such as Tech) can hang 28 on Clemson, they can on anybody.

Muschamp supposedly resigned. I am sure he's really upset as he hauls his 6 million plus buyout to the bank. Wow - I know I'd be crying if I was a total bust 3 out of 4 years at my job and they told me to hit the road with a 6 million dollar good bye check. The best acting job you will ever see is these coaches trying to look depressed as they hit the door with enough money to go sit on the beach with for the rest of their lives  :) Poor guys!

Gurley is gone - I can only imagine what he might have done if he had just kept straight. He was a sight to behold when he ran with the ball - he was special. He will be fine and he will be a great pro back...I wish him a swift recovery and am grateful that he chose UGA. Chubb is going to be a great back for UGA ~ especially if the O line (which was supposed to be average this year) keeps opening up four lane highways to run through. But give the Chubby man credit - he's as tough as a bucket of shipyard nails. We need to get Michel, Marshall, Turman and Douglass in there as well to share the load. We have a JC running back committed as well who looks like a tough runner.

The losses to SC and Fl. are almost inexplicable, but there have been A LOT of games this year that can fit that bill. It's college ball ~

As for some posters saying we will "back in" to the SEC CG game. Oh, you mean like Bama "backed in" to the NC game when they didn't even win the conference? Get over it - any way you get there is good. You need a little luck to hit the highest levels. Don't begrudge a little fairy dust here and there - last year Auburn sure wasn't crying over their good luck, were they? Nah - "The prayer at Jordan Hare" ..."Kick, Bama, kick!"

I can live with a 11-2 record and a trip to the SEC CG...no problem! Go Dawgs!

@LuxLucisofVerum

Agree with much of that. Still not really surprised we lost to Carolina up there. They just go out of their minds when they play the Dawgs. Whole dang state does. Something in the psych make-up of  a South Carolinian.

As for backing into the SECCG. My reply to whoever wrote that is No way! We should be the team in ATL from the East. I'll give you that we backed into it a few years ago and I kinda was hoping Carolina would go take that beat down from LSU that year. But this UGA team is, without a doubt, the best in the East this year and I think can hang with BAMA (most likely opponent) if they play focused and intense. And possibly pull something off to put down in the ol' tradition book.

Just a shame about Gurley. That 1-2 punch with them two in there would have been amazing to watch the rest of the way through this year.

DoctorNo
DoctorNo

It's embarrassing that Mizzou is going to win the SEC east.  Even if Mizzou loses one of their games and UGA backs into the SEC East title, it's hollow.  I think from a player standpoint they are clearly a better team than Florida and South Cackalacky, but not on the days they played the games. That's on the coaching.

VoyagerDawg
VoyagerDawg

@DoctorNo If Mizzou loses another game and Georgia goes to the SECCG, how do you characterize that as backing in?  The two teams would have the same number of losses and Georgia would have the head-to-head. In that scenario, Georgia wins the East and moves onto the SECCG.  No backing in.

SinceVince

yeah the Kool Aid Drinkahs were saying Mizzou would lose at College Station.... Crickets.......

SinceVince

Once again with Richt we have to hope to back into the SECCG. Richt couldnt take care of business while having two weeks to prepare for both a lowly South Carolina team and a pathetic Florida team. Our passing game is still a masked farce and and we are teetering as one dimensional with a freshman named Chubb who is very good. If Chubb goes down our team is toast.  At least we may be going to the Crapital One or Outhouse Bowl under Richt.

This was the most complete game the Dawgs have played this season and against a decent opponent.  The Dawg defense surprised me.  Tough, tough seeing Gurley go down.  He is a great player and will do well at the Pro level.  I hope we pick up some more skilled receivers in this "draft."  As we've learned you cannot have too many good backs.  Hopefully we can keep that pipeline open.  Go Dawgs.  Need a little help from the Vols and the Hogs.

Muschamp had a chance to save his job and the Gators crapped their pants.  They made all the mistakes they didn't make against Georgia yesterday.  A blocked punt in final minute?  Following a blocked FG?  Whatever cred Muschamp had accrued by beating Georgia got flushed by those 2 gaffes.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of months.

Personally, I like what Muschamp is rebuilding at Florida . . . .

The large majority of GatorNation remains supportive of what Muschamp is trying to get done in Gainesville......and that includes me as well.

DawginCO
DawginCO

The Dawgs looked the part of a champion last night.  The D was as good as it's been in years.  The offense was like a steamroller.  Imagine what kind of blowout it would have been without all the dropped passes?  Mason was sharp but the drops by iMac and Conley really put a damper on what we could have done.  But while Auburn was all over Gurley like stink on you know what, they had no answer for Chubb.  He looked like a Heisman contender.  It was just jaw dropping to watch.

I am not saying a word about Gurley's injury until it is confirmed.  A bad sprain could be season ending at this point.  The fact remains that if the injury isn't an ACL that he could back in time for a bowl.

I hated to see Miss St go down.  I think UT will take down Mizzou next week and the Dawgs will be Atlanta bound.  Beating an undefeated and #1 ranked Miss St in the SEC CG would have been the only way into the playoff for the Dawgs, barring complete chaos at the top in the next couple of weeks.  And that is totally possible.

@DawginCO If Gurley's knee isn't blown out he had better use that brain and take the rest of the season off...........if it is injured well.........i hate being right all the dang time.

@gtcaryd @DawginCO one thing people are overlooking. Todd Gurley is a junior with one more year of eligibility. He has an option other than this years pro draft. It would not hurt the dogs or him for next years backfield crew to be him, chubb, michel, marshall and whoever else.

I'd rather play Bama that MSU in the SECCG--to try and avenge that loss 2 years ago, which is still stinging.

Congrats to UGA for winning against an Auburn bunch that has been winning with smoke and mirrors all year. The SEC East is about on par with the ACC. Looks like UGA and the Indiana Hoosiers are tied for the best 2 teams in the East.

@SinceVince  LOL.  Last night was a prime opportunity for a choke troll.  A big play offense that does what your defense has had trouble stopping, a opposing defense that was supposedly strong against the run, a kickoff return and a fake punt negated by penalty,  sure seemed a setup for a choke to me.

Choke on this troll 34-7.  Domination.  Lowest point and total offensive output under Malzahn.  Choke on it because you and the other trolls were absolutely wrong.  LMFAO!

I would say the NFL will snap him up as a DC.  He is an outstanding defensive mind.  Just not suited for a head coaching position right now, primarily because of his views and approaches to the offensive side of the ball.

Jacksonville is close to the Georgia border and tons of Georgia fans near Jacksonville, and Atlanta is no where near the Florida border and not easy access for tons of Florida fans.  Florida would never agree to that. But I wish it would go to a home and home deal.  But that will not happen either.  JAX is good for both teams and is 50/50 for fans in the stadium.
