RALEIGH, N.C. — I’ll post a full column soon on Georgia Tech’s 56-23 in over North Carolina State. Until then, here are my three “Short Takes” on the game.

UPDATE: HERE’S a link to the full game column.

1. THE DEFENSE … SCORES: Welcome to the Twilight Zone. There was a sequence, beginning late in the first quarter, when Georgia Tech’s offense was on the sideline and North Carolina State ran 25 straight plays. But the Jackets outscored the Wolfpack 14-0. In brief: Quayshawn Nealy intercepted a pass at the Tech 1, returned it 69 yards, but fumbled. Technically, that started a new N.C. State possession. Two plays later, D.J. White had an interception and 38-yard return for a touchdown. On the following possession, blitzing linebacker Tyler Marcordes forced a fumble with a sack, leading to Nealy’s 43-yard return for another score. Tech’s defense has forced 11 turnovers in the last three games against Pittsburgh (six), Virginia (two) and N.C. State (three).

2. NOT THAT OFFENSE NEEDED HELP, BUT: There’s a reason N.C. State is 1-5 in the ACC. The Jackets’ first nine full possessions resulted in eight touchdowns and a fumble. They didn’t punt. Their offense didn’t need any help, but I guess it in the Wolfpack’s DNA to do something. So when Tech lined up for a field goal attempt in the third quarter, a Wolfpack player was hit with a personal foul for leaping on the Jackets’ long snapper, presumably in an attempt to block the kick. That gave the Jackets a first down at the 11. Two players later, Matt Connors ran three yards for a touchdown and a 49-16 lead. Side note: B-back Synjyn Days rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown before being pulled in the third quarter.

3. THE BIG PICTURE: The odds are still against the Jackets catching Duke for the Coastal Division lead. But an upset win over visiting Clemson next week to conclude its ACC schedule could be a significant boost in terms of what bowl they’re invited to. At 5-2 in the conference, Tech would need Duke (4-1) to lose two of its remaining three games to win the Coastal because the Blue Devils own the tiebreaker by virtue of its win over the Jackets. Duke has an easy remaining ACC schedule, and all of the games are at home: Virginia Tech (1-4), North Carolina (2-3) and Wake Forest (0-5).

I don't see Tech dislodging Duke from the #1

coastal position. So I would happily take a loss against Clemson for a win against UGA.  One win among these two means a fine season.

I have a different opinion about Laskey and Days, use both.  I was also impressed Johnson used Byerly twice to get a touchdown rather than going with a small QB.  Young Mr Byerly is proving to be a wonderful weapon after he marched the team twice (once a touchdown pass and the second to run out clock on goal).  Johnson is finally understanding he needs two capable QBs and he needs to pass when the situation calls for it.

Days has been a beast since Laskey went down.  I'll lose a lot of respect for Johnson if he hands Laskey his starting spot back instead of rightfully letting Days start the rest of the season.

The last three games have convinced me that Paul Johnson is either a bone head or just a stubborn old man - haha, prolly both.

Not using Syngyn Days effectively over the last three years screams mismanagement. Who knows what the Jackets could have done if Johnson stopped trying to fit square pegs into round holes.

THe new ajc must have been done by the same people that did the obama care website.

Dominating a weak sister in a cream puff of a football conference is nothing to get excited about.  GT was lucky to get last minute wins against GSU and VPI.  At least you dropped MTSU and didn't schedule East Carolina.

Format still bad and they still can't do away with those annoying 'I made $9000 yesterday with my computer' posts.

I should be grateful that RUePaul and o-hio are MIA.

And we still are blessed by not having to slog through the journalists' 'full articles'.

GO Tech, knock the P out of Clempson.

Had a hard time finding the article and these comments.  Looks like I am late to the game, but the new format is terrible.

This really is awful.  The number of comments is only going to sink.  Most of the current ones are about the format itself.  FIX THIS!

OH ......  I get it now.  This is no longer a newspaper.  As noted immediately above this is a DIGITAL JUKEBOX....  Guess I will have to find another business site to get my news and sports stories.  Not into tunes on digital Jukeboxes.

fire your web design team or tell them to walk back to Athens.....I'm not the brightest bulb in the room but it took me 5+ minutes to find or get to the comments.... by that time, you've lost me as a reader.

@DawgNole

I saw your response to my question, but figured you might not see my response if I put it there.

I know/knew a lot of the staff in Athens.  That area of the state was assigned to me after I went to the State Office from Fulton County.  There were a lot of good folks there (& I trained a lot of them).  I know it's no consolation (and a moot point now), but as bad as her experiences may have been in Athens, she's very fortunate she didn't work in Fulton County.

I wish her well, especially as a fellow DFCS "alum".  You must be proud.

I'm posting this same basic info on multiple sites, so my apologies if you've already seen it -- I'm hoping it'll help.

Someone from the AJC e-mailed me back today, she said they are actually reading every e-mail sent to feedback@ajc.com

About the comments/postings issue, she said "It’s a top priority and you can expect improvement in that area very soon."  I also asked her about the future of the live game blogs.

Keep your fingers crossed and e-mail your complaints to feedback@ajc.com.

AND BE SPECIFIC - just saying the redesign sucks doesn't help.

Jeff , why are your having to write about Tech ? What put you in this dawghouse ?

If you had behaved, you could have written

this weeks version of " 10 fun facts about Todd Gurley".   Boy you sure screwed up.

But.. but...but... we are about to decimated by mighty Athens Uni. I'm frightened to death.

Can't stand the new format.  I tried to find a game-day blog for the Jackets game, but gave up and went to the ESPN site instead.  Looks like I'll be spending a lot more time at ESPN ... regrettably.

I can not find anything on this new format--anything I want to read about.  If this continues will just cancel my subscription for the AJC is useless

Don't care for the new format.  Its not user friendly.

I agree with every post concerning this so called upgrade. Sent an email and they basically said get used to it. I'm not really sure why a change was needed. No matter why people went to ajc.com commenting or reading comments was/is a big part of it.

I'm hoping every Jacket and Dawg is sending emails and after tomorrow, every Falcon fan also. Maybe that will get rid of this crap.

Go Jackets!!!

Was there a blog for GT or UGA game today?  never found it in this new format. As far as the total design of the new format - who did it?  I just want to be sure I never hire them or waste time on an interview with them for web site design.  Very difficult to find anything.  Please talk to the WSJ and use their design - easy to read and easy to find things.  This format looks like a picture book for a 3 year old.

In past weeks the Game day Blog would have anywhere from 600 to 1,000 comments, so what does the AJC do?

They remove the Gameday Blogs with the move to this new horrible format.

Thanks a lot AJC for not considering your online readers in your decisions.

Always good to hear from you on this. She really liked the folks she worked with, but her caseload--and those of her colleagues--was so heavy that she became disillusioned. Didn't feel like she was able to "do any good." She was especially disappointed in the judges.

@Quackmeyer @GeorgiaBugman

While that may your opinion I watched Days play for two years in HS. He powered Hillgrove to two playoff seasons. I understand Johnson has only one offensive philosophy (gimmick running) but he has squandered Days cannon of an arm and that's perplexing and just plain sad.

@DawgNole

Yes, some of the judges were (and I'm sure still are) real _____s (fill in the blank), ran their courts like they were tyrants and couldn't care less what the law said.  I better stop, I'll get myself all wound up.

Hey, what do you think are the chances that UGA will beat Auburn?  Maybe on a wild last second play?  I would love it.  Talk about payback.
