Election day: Vote to keep or fire coaches

Mark Richt and Paul Johnson wish you a happy election day. (Jason Getz, AJC)

Happy election day. Here’s your chance to vote.

I’ve lived in Atlanta for more than 25 years. As much as the professional and college sports scene can turn the area into an emotional train wreck, I can’t recall a time like this when it seemed like almost every major coach was on the firing line.

There was that time in December of 2002 when the Hawks and Thrashers (rest in peace) fired their respective coaches on the same day. Never before had the teams’ president, Stan Kasten, so closely resembled Darth Vader.

So I thought I would conduct a little experiment (and probably blow up the laboratory in the process). A simple question:  What coach/manager do you want to keep?

Obviously, the Braves have already decided to keep Fredi Gonzalez. I don’t believe Georgia coach Mark Richt is in trouble, despite last week’s loss to Florida. The Falcons’ Mike Smith obviously is in trouble and is coaching for his job the rest of the season. The Hawks’ Mike Budenholzer, who was impressive in his first season, clearly is safe, although impending new ownership always leaves a degree of uncertainty. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s status is uncertain. Georgia State’s Trent Miles is losing but he’s in an impossible situation right now.

There are six polls. Just click “Keep” or “Fire” next to the six coaches and list your reasons below for your vote. The college basketball season is about to start, so I’ve chosen to exclude Georgia’s Mark Fox and Georgia Tech’s Brian Gregory from this poll. No worries. There will be plenty of time for you to weigh in during our spring “election.”

And now, to “Speakers’ Corner” . . .

UGA clearly has superior talent. Nobody is arguing with Richt's ability to recruit. It's all about the stupid mistakes he makes repeatedly costing us key games and millions of dollars. Nice guy but dumb as a box of rocks.

Russ Chew Toy:  Beg for Tech fans? You must first submit an application and then you may get a 5 year

probation status.   Dwag fans should become Ga State or Ga Southern fans which are more in line with your

type.

It is not the coach that is hindering the championship hopes of the falcons or the bulldogs.  It is the caliber of their players.  You have got to have better than average offensive and defensive lines.  You have got to have really good linemen.

As an Alabama fan I vote that we keep Coach Richt.

thumbs down on mark and katherine richt, they have plenty of money and that's what it is all about, yes?

Where's the poll question to keep or fire Thomas Dimitroff?  Here's a vote for FIRE.

Come on Hart fire Fredi G...  Braves fans deserve better.

when fla fires muschamp at the end of the year, richt should hire him to be Ga's D coordinator!

Where was the fire or keep Schultz?  Fire.  Definitely fire.

@BooBooBear  Really, Boo-Boo? Schultz calls it as he sees it.  Coming from someone that calls him/herself "BooBooBear"?  Don't mean much.

Dawgs need to change their allegiance.  Soon, the Athens Daily Barker will have a larger circulation than the AJC.

wreckmaniac

I now see why AJC has become a "paper" that is not distributed 25 miles beyond the print plant.  When you send 8 reporters to cover a team that hasn't won its division in 10 years (UGA) and one reporter with only pencils and a few pieces of paper to cover a team that has won its division three times in the past 6 years ( Tech) you are run by a pack of clowns.  You will soon read the entire AJC on the back of cereal boxes.

@wreckmaniac Not even Tech fans care about division championships of the All Cupcake Conference. If they did, wouldn't they actually show up for the games in that little Cracker Jacket stadium where they play?

The AJC is smarter than I thought!

@LADawg @wreckmaniac Current National Champion is from the ACC.  Stadium size doesn't translate to wins stupid.  If that t  were the case, Tennessee would never lose.  But, when faced with poor performance, dog fans always change the subject.

@wreckmaniac Where did you get Georgia Tech won 3 out of 6 years. In 2009 GT won the Conference Championship but had to vacate the Championship because of sanctions. In 2012 Florida State beat Tech in the Championship.  In the last 6 years Tech finished Ranked 22ND in 2008 , 13TH in 2009 , and in 2010 , 2011, 2012 and 2013 didn't even finish ranked in the top 25.

DawginCO
DawginCO

@wreckmaniac  Division or Conference?  Big difference.  Where is the supposed superior Tech intellect sir?  Well?  If you put it out there like that you deserve to be slapped down for it.

The fact is that there are many times more Georgia fans and alumni than Tech fans and alumni.  If a business wants to stay in business then they recognize where their largest constituency is and they tailor their product to it.

I guess you aren't so smart after all, eh?

Miss or Miss State is about to win a nat champ.  Has UGA won one since one of the Mississippi's ?

UGA won one so long ago that I forget when they did win it.

I think CMR has cast a spell over Athens.   Half of the respondents here  seem to be very impressed with the job he has done.  The fans who demand a nat champ are in the minority, by a lot.

Richt is a classy coach! He helped me forget Jim "have I got an investment for you" Donnan and Ray Goof. Thanks Coach Richt - the world needs more like you. Bulldog fans don't deserve you.

@TreeRollins -  Yeah?  How about Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier or Urban Meyer?  Did you forget about them too?

TreeRollins

I say we raise a toast to that beer drinking, drunk driving, Spurs-licking excuse of a coach of the Hawks! He is by far Atlanta's best coach and has this sad-sack group of misfits playing great basketball. Only he could make winners out of these goobers! Why, I wouldn't hire Pero Antic to collect my garbage - you kidding?

Here's to you Coach Bud - and please go easy on the suds!

ShootinTheHooch

@TreeRollins Has Atlanta still got a "professional" basketball team? I thought they moved to Calgary.

Thanks, Tree for doing your part to help the ATL become deserving of the name "LOSERSVILLE"!

ShootinTheHooch
ShootinTheHooch

Some years ago, Vince Dooley referred to the UF as a sleeping giant and that with the right leadership they will be a force in college football. Then came Spurrier. Dooley's comments were made when the ATL was nothing more than Birmingham east and Cobb and Gwinnett were out in the country.

Now, UGA is the sleeping giant and with the right leadership they will be a force in college football. As Richt said when he took the job at UGA, championships can be won with talent from within the borders of Georgia. Obviously, not with this leadership.

Also, when Richt took this job he said he was going to seal the borders of Georgia. Once again, many players from Georgia are going to to play for and win championships this year. None with UGA.

Sounds like you people are divided.  So tie goes to the runner.  He stays.

What do you think Auburn fans were saying a year after Chisik won the nat champ ?  What do you think Bama

fans were saying after they had Mike Shula for 5 years ?

After 14 years, CMR has become permanent. This is because you have been happy with him until now.

So the vote proves that fans love CMR.  They are content with the "good but not great" result.  So the minority needs to accept that.  If they don't like it they can always become fans of another team or even another Georgia team.

Russ' Chew Toy

So you're begging people to become Tech fans? Has it come to that? Hilarious.

Thomas Dimitroff: FIRE

John Schuerholz/John Hart/Bobby Cox: FIRE

Danny Ferry: KEEP

DiehardDawg
DiehardDawg

Please tell me how you can be okay with this:

Let the numbers speak for themselves:

Dawgs vs end of the season ranked opponents. Not top 10 just ranked.

Since 2008......2-15

Last 2 years....0-10

vs SEC since 2008....0-10

vs top 12 since 2008...0-9

There you go. Maybe that will bust through the delusion of you Disney Dawgs.

We suck! Thank you for voting to keep Mark Richt, you have doomed us all to more of the above. - See more at: http://jeffschultz.blog.ajc.com/2014/11/04/election-day-vote-to-keep-or-fire-coaches/#sthash.iPvRslSC.dpuf

@DiehardDawg This hopefully will add to your stats...

CMR vs. Top 25 (at time they played the game) since 2008 is 11-22.

That also doesn't include the FL loss last weekend, nor the Vandy & Nebraska loss last year because they all were unranked. I'm sure there's more of those too.

People act like the UGA football program will fall off a cliff in they get a new coach.

They are all paralyzed by fear of the unknow...  I'm tired of the under achievement.

MaybeMaybeNot

@DiehardDawg Coach Richt is a good Christian man who instills Christian morals into these young men.  It is not all about wins and loses you know.  Not many other coaches would instill that type of morality into these young men and mold them into the fine citizens they will become after they leave the program.

Newsflash. .... So does Nick Saban.

Rankings at the time they played means nothing.

Russ' Chew Toy

Then he should take the post of Dean of Men like the much beloved late Dean Tate and resign the the office (and salary) of Head Football Coach. Or are you saying that UGA needs to pay someone $3+M a year to focus on parenting a small exclusive subset of UGA students and leave the other 99% of the student population to fend for their own souls themselves? Last time I checked a football coach at the collegiate level was responsible for wining games, not correcting poor parenting.
