COLUMBIA, Mo. — For my full column on Georgia’s 34-0 win over Missouri, click here.

Here are my three “Short Takes” on the game.

1. DEFENSE GROWS UP: Georgia’s young defense had some erratic moments in the first five games of the season, which was expected given the number of personnel changes and the overall youth. But the Bulldogs dominated Missouri. The Tigers had five turnovers, including four interceptions. They managed only 28 net yards on their first five possessions. They failed to convert a third down  (0-for-7). Some of it was the result of their own ineptitude but a lot of it was just sound defensive play, both in positioning and tackling. Credit to defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who used his sixth different defensive starting lineup (including five secondaries) in six games.

2. MINUS YOU-KNOW-WHO: With Todd Gurley suspended indefinitely, we couldn’t be sure how Georgia’s offense would respond. So far, so great. Freshman Nick Chubb, Gurley’s replacement at tailback, proved he can take a pounding, with 38 carries for 143 yards and a touchdown, as well as four receptions. Quarterback Hutson Mason didn’t suddenly morph into Matthew Stafford but he was efficient and relatively error-free, completing 22 of 28 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Before Mason left in the fourth quarter, the offense also converted 11 of 19 third downs. Mason also scored the Dogs’ first touchdown on an 11-yard run. This was easily Mason’s best game of the season.

3. KUDOS TO THE COACHES: Georgia’s coaching staff not only clearly outcoached Missouri on the field. The entire staff, from Mark Richt to Pruitt and Mike Bobo on down, did a brilliant job keeping players focused in what had to be one of the program’s most emotionally taxing weeks ever. If the Dogs go on to win the SEC East and have the kind of season some envisioned with Gurley in the lineup, remember how everybody responded this week.

I have no problem with gtcaryd's posts. He's a Tech fan and usually pretty fair with his Georgia comments. But for the life of me I don't understand guys like OH-IO, Wet Willie and SinceVince. Clearly not UGA fans, just here to offer constant negative stuff, never funny or creative.

I'm proud of Richt, Pruitt, Bobo, Mason, Chubb & Co. for stepping it up at Mizzou. As or GT, they were due for a loss, but I hope they bounce back and run the table. At least up until Nov. 29.

Simple...win the SEC and you're in the Final Four. If not then we're off to some Bowl that will be about half empty at best.

@gtcaryd  Rankings don't mean much before or during the season.  Past season rankings don't mean much either... unless of course you were that one team that finished #1.  During the season all you can hope for is that you have not already eliminated your self from attaining that #1 at the end of the season.  Right now there are maybe 15 teams that have not eliminated themselves if they can win out.  That is why the current system works.  Every week matters.  If you are a fan of one of those 15 teams enjoy each upcoming week.  BTW... Congratulations the Mississippi State also!!

We moved up 3 spots, to #10. This is adequate. All we need to do is keep winning, in a convincing manner! We will move up!

Don't let idiot trolls like SinceVince (bubbatavious), convince you that we failed because we didn't move into the top 5. That wasn't going to happen anyway.

Starting with Arkansas (on the road), a good win there will be enough to move us another spot or maybe 2, especially if someone in front of us loses. Plenty of time to move into the top 5. As a matter of fact, I'd rather be @5 at the end of the year, so we get a shot at the playoffs. 10th right now, is about right, but only as long as we keep playing like we did in Missouri....

oledawg
oledawg

@SinceVince @keendaddy  We don't want the press.  What does "the press" matter? This is why we now have a 4 team playoff.  Win each week by one point and it will all work out.  That is true for about 15 Div 1 football programs right now.

BravoDawg
BravoDawg

Where are all those Mizzou losers that were talking all this trash about we wanted GURLEY to play so when we beat  the Dawgs they wont have any excuses???  Bahahahaha freakin Mizzou, last year was abberation, its back to business as usual, WE OWN the East, deal with it!  woof woof woof

LuxLucisofVerum
LuxLucisofVerum

My best case scenario is for the Dawgs to win the east and get to the SEC CG and, if we have all of our wounded players back, make a game of it. If we win the SEC and get a good bowl win I would be happy. I am not worried about a NC this year. I think that is a bit of a reach considering our youth in the secondary and our lack of a strong, deep threat passing game. That is my rational assessment. My Dawg brained assessment is: "We run the table  baby! NC rings for everybody"!

oledawg
oledawg

@FrankFraticelli  Lot of wisdom in that comment Frank.  Right now all Dawg fans can hope for is that we win each week by one point or more.  Doesn't matter.  Win and ALL will take care of itself.  I am not putting any money on UGA winning out but I can hope that old lady luck smiles down on us each week and find a way to win.

LuxLucisofVerum
LuxLucisofVerum

I think the reason we did not move up in the polls is two fold: One, we don't have Gurley and regardless of how well the backups played that is a huge loss. Secondly, the top ten has some really good teams up there. There's not much wiggle room unless somebody loses in a bad way. I for one, realistically, see the Dawgs as one of the better teams in the country WITH Gurley. But now, we are probably right were we need to be. If we had Murray back this year I would be more bold in my assessment, but with Mason, as good of a journeyman as he is, we don't have that aerial firepower you need to be in the top 5 this year. At least we haven't seen it yet. Somewhere on this road you are going to get into a shootout and need to score quick and often and a great running game alone is not going to do it.

SinceVince
SinceVince

Boo Boo needs to impress.. We had two Turn Ovahs at one point in the game and only 3 points to show for it. plus we sat back and protected the lead late in the 2nd QTR instead of going for the throat. BOO BOO football at its finest! Pollsters were not impressed...

keendaddy

@BIGDAWG31650,

SinceVince, is a troll, not a fan. Don't waste your time...

BIGDAWG31650
BIGDAWG31650

@SinceVince Just in case you don't know, Coach Bobo doesn't block, throw, catch or run the ball.  He did however call a really good game yesterday within the confines of his players talents.

doubleg
doubleg

@SinceVince  Using your rationale, at one point we had ZERO points. And if we "sat back and protected the lead"  as you so brilliantly pointed out, there must have been a negative outcome.  Right?  Right?  No?

Idiot........

UGA made a statement baby!!!!! We are the best team in the east! All of you haters best believe that!! Free Todd Gurley!!!!

@Dawg350 Well the pollsters didn't think too much of our win... we stayed at # 10.

@Dawg350 Didn't impress the pollsters...maybe the loss to SC is on their mind

gooddog69
gooddog69

@SinceVince @Dawg350 I dont agree that we have to impress the pollsters. Basically the SEC champ is going and MAYBE another from the conference....most likely from the West. SOOOOO for Georgia to make it I believe we would have to beat Auburn and everyone else, if we do that it doesn't matter where we are ranked today or in 3 weeks...get to the SEC and win.....No one could argue that.....otherwise it will be SEC champ....winner of the Notre Dame/Fla St game, Pac 12 Champ and one other.....Baylor or someone like that. It will be obvious at the end of the season I think.
