Michigan botches recruiting pitch

Can you spot the typo in this recruiting pitch?

Can you spot the typo in this recruiting pitch?

There are two subjects I generally try to stay away from: Recruiting (because it nauseates me) and mocking somebody else’s spelling mistakes (because, well, you know).

Butch Jones' Mother's Day card.

Butch Jones’ Mother’s Day card.

But this item brings the worst of both worlds together, so . . .

College football coaches are going to greater lengths than ever to get the attention of recruits. Tennessee coach Butch Jones sent a player’s recruit a Mother’s Day card. Notre Dame photo-shopped the image of coveted high school quarterback Blake Barnett on a poster of the school’s seven Heisman Trophy winners, with the question, “Are you next?”

Michigan coach Brady Hoke also tried to get creative in his pursuit of Detroit high school running back Mike Weber (who also reportedly has been offered by Tennessee but is not being recruited by

Georgia or Georgia Tech). The school sent Weber a fake ESPN Magazine cover with a picture of the player carrying the football in a Michigan uniform. A large headline reads, “The Man of the Year.”

The problem is there’s a big typo elsewhere on the magazine cover. Can you spot it?

Weber referenced the mistake on Twitter with this comment: “u of m cold with these edits.”

I’m not suggesting Weber will make his decision based on the typo. But it is funny coming from Michigan, one of the better public universities in the nation.

Can you imagine the reaction in these parts if an SEC school made the same mistake?

God forbid somebody makes a mistake in this country.  We're a nation of fault finders.

All the proof readers must have been laid off at Michigan just like the AJC.

He probably can't spell his own name much less be able to detect that American was spelled wrong.

If he can't spell Mike, the black population is in real trouble with the rest of their names!

@HotDawg

That wouldn't be the same black population that you expect to send your program FB recruits so that you mutts can beat Bama, Auburn, Florida, etc?

I'm  sure they'll just love Muttville after reading your comments above.

The all-time stupidest recruiting event was Richt's "missing man" psycho drama.  I agree with Jeff that recruit pandering is akin to a stomach virus.  Many of these kids are so stupid (i.e. double check cashing) that only the most superficial forms of pandering appeals to them.  Raise admission standards, then talk to qualified recruits like men.

32 Fumbles with small hands, 41 Interceptions 6 feet and 3/8 inch does not see over the line well, and 95 Sacks doesn't have speed to escape 300 lbs. defensive linemen, he called his own number 51 % of the plays with the most losses 17 as the starting quarterback to only 35 wins 67 percent win percentage for Coach Mark Richt who had a 81 % win percentage with David Greene the starting QB 42-10, same 52 games started as Aaron Murray.  He has not run the 40-yard dash, but times clearly are poor.  Billed as a dual-threat QB, he rushed 287 times for 393 yards, a paltry 1.4 yards a rush.

Injured in high school, he came to UGA as the chosen-one by Mark Richt who never had such a horrid period - the worst period in his 14-years here.  Once he got here, he got injured in Fall Practice and had to be Redshirted when we needed a QB to replace to 1st Round NFL Draft Pick 1st Pick over-all Matthew Stafford for 2009.  Then, his senior season here, tore his ACL.

Tough guy, he is small of stature, a ball hog who calls his own number when he is the worst athlete on the team - by a long wide margin.  He's smart, prone to injury, with a good arm and not much else who is not a winner.  In Mark Richt's 14 years here, he never had a Starting QB who lost so many games - especially against the top teams.

You signed him to a 4-year contract.  He'll never throw an NFL pass, and no one will trade for him.  No QB here got any snaps except for him all 4 years.  Even if it was a cupcake, he found a way to make the game close enough that he stayed on the field.

10 % of his plays here were Fumbles, Interceptions and Sacks.  We have no one ready to take-over for him.  He made the team worse.  On the biggest stage, he Fumbled, threw Interceptions, and was Sacked - at the worst possible moment.  $ 2.402 million 4 years $ 184,000 signing bonus.

You either cut and pasted that or just wasted quite a bit of your life. Nobody cares.

@ThomasBrown What's the matter ThomAss, you mad because he is already making more money than you. Brother you put the D in Disturbed.

@ThomasBrown  Dude, suck it.  Aaron Murray is a great guy, a hell of a Dawg, and a perfectly capable starting NFL QB.  He is gone now, I do not see why you care.  UGA will be as good in the fall as it wants to be the same as it was start of last year. Lesser (athletic) teams have done far greater things because they wanted it more.  (see Auburn 2013)  See what I did there?  Now, go away, pest.

What a bunch of pandering dim wits. I have a novel idea. How about acting like a professional and talk to these recruits like men. Oh yeah, and buy a dictionary.

Lol....

I'm surprised the recruit caught it...lol. Then to top it off, don't make grammatical errors when clowning someone else over spelling. It's even worse. That's for you JS

The mother's day card is a little Eddie Haskel-ish but the Notre Dame one is pretty awesome.  And I am not even a Notre Dame fan.

@FlatTire Coattail rider. Conference vs. Team. I root for teams, not conferences. All SECoward teams are not creates equal. In fact, most are rather average, unranked and lose to team like Nebraska is crappy bowls.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@Delusionaldog  Let me know when Ohio St beats UGA or a southern team for that matter in a bowl game.  And let me know when Ohio St can even come close  to matching UGA's record vs the Big 10

Congrats to Nebraska for beating a team who just lost its starting QB and a team who lost most of its starters on offense.  Yea they fared really well against them the year before

And coward?  Yea I really like how the mighty Big 10 goes out and gets some powerhouse programs like Rutgers and Maryland to finally strengthen that already laughable weak conference
